Now you can take BlazBlue with you wherever you go in this great port!5
Let me start by saying that I absolutely adore BlazBlue. It was easily my favorite fighting game of 2009 (possibly my favorite game period of 2009), and is right up there with the Guilty Gear series as my favorite fighting game of all time. That being said, I was overjoyed after hearing that a portable version of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger was heading for the PSP. The idea of being able to take BlazBlue with me wherever I go was an exciting thought. So now that I actually have my copy of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable, I can in fact say that my excitement was justified.

If you've never played or even heard of BlazBlue before, it's a fast and complex 2D fighting game featuring a cast of 12 highly unique characters. Even though the size of its character roster is often criticized for being "small", the characters contain more depth and personality than other fighting games with twice the roster size.

All the modes from the console version of BlazBlue make a return here in the portable version: Arcade mode which is your standard "fight a ladder of 10 opponents", Versus mode which lets you battle against the AI with the stage and background music of your choosing, Score Attack which makes you face the entire cast of characters in a row to aim for a high score, Training mode which gives you several different options to try out combos and tactics on a customizable AI opponent, and even the entire Story mode (including the hilarious Teach Me Miss Litchi (Booby Lady)) that lets you learn the story of BlazBlue and its characters.

The Portable version also contains a new mode called Legion which was not in the console version of BlazBlue. Legion plays kind of like a tactical survival mode. You select a character and move around a series of connected areas that contain one or more enemies that you can fight. As you fight and defeat these enemies you get the chance to add some of them to your growing army. Your characters only regain a little bit of life after a match, and if they die, they're gone for good (hence the similarity to a survival mode). The objective is to take control over the entire map to win. I personally didn't find this mode to be anything special. There really isn't a lot of strategy involved while moving around the map other than "fight and collect characters you are good with". The biggest draw back here is that there are only 3 maps to play on (easy, normal, and hard) and they are not randomly generated, so it's the same map with the same enemies every time. There's not much reason to come back once you've beaten it.

The other addition to the portable version is the new Shop mode. Here you can unlock locked content (Gallery images, Unlimited (boss version) Characters, Astral Heats, character scenarios, and Teach Me Miss Litchi episodes) using an in game currency called PD. You gain PD by doing pretty much anything in the game. The locked content is reasonably priced too, so it's not overly difficult or too easy to unlock stuff. An additional note here is that the portable version contains unlimited versions of all 12 characters (the console version only had unlimited versions of Ragna, Rachel, Hakumen, and v-13 unless you purchased the DLC).

There is also a Network mode like in the console version. Here you can create or join customizable lobbies for up to 4 people and fight. Unfortunately, this mode is local only, meaning no online play. I suppose one could use the Play Station 3's Ad Hoc party mode to go online and play, but if you're that close to your PS3 to begin with, why not just play the console version of BlazBlue which has a fantastic net code?

If you're curious about how the game play is in the portable version, I can gladly say that it's almost identical to the console version. The most noticeable difference here is that the graphics (primarily the character's sprites) took a major hit. This is of course expected seeing as how beautiful and detailed the console and arcade versions of BlazBlue were, but the graphics here may look worse than you expect. I had seen screenshots of the game prior to its release thinking "the game will surely look much better when it's packed onto the PSP's smaller screen." Unfortunately it still looks pretty rough. The game's backgrounds were also stripped of the 3D objects and don't contain as much movement. In comparison I found it to look inferior to Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus for the PSP. All this being said though, BlazBlue contains a lot of flashy action on the screen at any given time, so the graphics were likely scaled down for something far more important: silky smooth game play. The great news is the game plays just as smoothly on the portable version as it does on the Console and Arcade versions. I was able to pull off large combos and tricky maneuvers without hassle. Even though the graphics have been scaled down, it shouldn't interfere with how you play the game at all.

As for controls, the game fortunately let's you map its 4 attacks (A B C and Drive) anywhere you want on the PSP. This is helpful for characters that require simultaneous and/or held button presses (like Rachel, Arakune, and Carl) so you can have a more ideal setup, like 2 attacks on the PSP's triggers, and the other 2 on the PSP's face buttons for instance. Like the console version, the portable version also has a "cheat stick" which lets you pull off special moves by pressing either up down left or right on the PSP's nub. This means that the nub cannot be used for movement. I did find it tricky to pull off more complicated special moves like a 720 using the PSP's directional pad (I'm used to a fight stick) but I highly doubt that's the fault of the game rather than a need for me to practice more with the Directional Pad.

In summary, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable is a great release. If you don't own a PS3, 360, or have access to an arcade with BlazBlue in it, this is a great way to experience a brilliant game. Despite the new features like Legion and Shop, the portable version doesn't offer an enhanced experience over the console version. The main draw here for the owners of the console version is being able to take BlazBlue with you wherever you go, and let's face it, playing BlazBlue while waiting for an appointment or while driving a boring commute is a great time passer (I hope I don't have to point out my sarcasm in that last example). Either way, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable is great way to experience the great BlazBlue universe. NOW GIVE ME CONTINUUM SHIFT!

You like fighting games? Get this game!5
I already reviewed the Limited Edition of this game but I believe this game is so great I had to review it again. First of all thank heavens for Street Fighter IV. Because of the success of that game, (yeah, go get that one too if you haven't already), the 2-D fighting genre has been revitalized. Anyway, back to the review, there are many elements to BlazBlue that make it such a great fighter. So if you wanna know why I gave this game 5 stars, read on!

First thing is the diverse cast of characters. Each character in BlazBlue plays completely different. In some games, if you've mastered one character, you've mastered half of them. This is not the case here. Aksys accomplishes this with an interesting mechanic called the Drive System. Each character's drive can be performed by simply pressing a button. This simple action opens up a wealth of possibilities. For one character, it enables you to freeze them. Another character's drive allows them to control the wind, giving you further control over your movements and even your projectiles movements. Yet another's character's will drain their opponents life and... well...you get the picture! You WILL find a character you fall in love with! I play mainly with the general who freezes and the kid vampire who controls wind. Which brings me to another point. Not only do the characters play differently they LOOK completely different too. The characters designs are completely over the top, thought not in a way which will repulse you. You do have some insane characters though. There is a scientist whose degenerated into a goo of insects, an asian doctor with huge boobs, a cat girl, and so on. Really the character designers had no problem thinking out of the box.

The second reason I love this game are the fighting mechanics themselves. BlazBlue does a couple of things to further differentiate itself from other games in it's genre. First, there is the combo system. Unlike SFIV, which to me felt like most of the combos were scripted, Blue's combo system encourages expirementation. Each combo relies on a stun value each hit produces. If you can get another move out before the character recovers, then you can create a combo. If you hit a character and create a "counter", which the game will announce, then the stun value is extended even more, letting you create some other combos not otherwise possible. Although there are some bread and butter combos, I was able to come up with some pretty awesome combos on my own, including some which takes more than half damage. I also enjoyed Blue's defense system. Instead of just holding back, you have the option of adding a barrier, which pushes back your opponents from you. You can also hit back at the moment an opponent attacks you. This gives you a shorter recovery time, allowing for some counters. And finally you have the barrier burst. The barrier burst drains all your barrier gauge, but stops any combo and pushes your opponent across the screen. This is very handy for stopping those insanely damaging combos, but leaves you in a "danger" state where you can no longer use your barrier, and you take about 25% more damage for the rest of the match.

The graphics in this game are simply phenomenal, and will appeal to those who appreciate anime and just great art in general. The characters are all high res 2-D sprites and beautifully animated. The backgrounds are combination of 2-D and 3-D and look great. As far as the music, many people have fallen in love with blue's soundtrack but apart from a few numbers, was mostly forgettable for me. As long as it didn't distract from the game, I was good. I did enjoy the sound effects though.

Finally, BlazBlue excels in it's online component. There is occasional lag but this is mostly limited to the introduction of each match. The actual matches themselves are almost flawless. Blue also lets you record your matches, and download other user's matches. A cool thing is that these are not huge video files. I believe it works by the game recording all the controller inputs, and then replaying them, thus effectively recreating the match. I'm not sure if this has been done before but I thought this was pretty clever, since this takes a minimal amount of space in your hard drive.

Wow, I could go on and on and on but I would easily double the length of this review. Blaz has multiple game modes, it looks great, and most importantly, it's just plain fun! Do yourself a favor and buy this game! Highly recommended!

    This game is Awsome.5
I really love this game. The graphic's are great, the voice acting is great, the onlineplay is great and the story mode is great. There is nothing bad I can say about this game. I play online on this game every day. This game never gets boring to me. I play people online and its very fun. Some of them cheat but I still have fun playing. My favorite characters in this game are Ragna, Noel and Jin. All the characters are Awsome but those are my favorite ones. If you don't have this game go and buy it. It's really worth it.

    Great game overall4
This game is incredibly fun and rewarding if you take the time to master your character, will not go much into depth as the other reviews, but i will point one thing out the other reviewers left out, the online. Be prepared to get your ass handed to you as most of the players online just use 3 characters that are kinda unbalanced and cheap. One of them is a robot girl named V-13 which you can learn easily and just spam 3 moves over and over and over again, which is really annoying and really ruins the game for me sometimes because i have to resort to using a cheap character as well just to beat that character. I know I will be bashed for this but think about it, can you really beat v-13 or noel with hakumen?? I really like to see that, well anyways if you tend to play on a regular basis you will be okay, you been warned.

    Gameplay
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus like all the previous iterations in the Guilty Gear series is a 2D fighter. Gameplay consist of one-on-one match ups between Japanese anime inspired characters utilizing multiple possible kick and punch combos attacks, as well as slashing attacks via your chosen character's signature weapon. These signature weapons are one way that XXX Accent Core Plus stands out from other games in the 2D fighter genre. Although players will see a bevy of familiar blunt and bladed weapons, they will notice that many characters wield off-the-wall items that have to be seen in action to be believed. Just a few examples of these are a pool cue, a talking life-sized key and an extendable pink teddy bear.

    Special Attacks and Defenses
Although true to the aggressive-oriented gameplay that has made the Guilty Gear series a player favorite for ten years, XX Accent Core Plus strikes a balance between offense and defense through "force break" attacks and "slash backs." Force break attacks are powered-up versions of characters' special techniques used to enhance individual offense strikes as well as combination attacks. On the defensive end, players can turn defensive tactics offensive with the "slash back," which with a little practice allows characters to consistently come out of a defensive animation quickly, giving you an opportunity to more safely counterattack from a defensive position.

    Characters
Just in time to take advantage of high resolution 480p graphics, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus features the return of over 25 beloved characters from the Guilty Gear franchise, including Kliff, Justice and many more. In addition to the shear number of available combatants, fans of the series will be pleased to find that all of their favorite characters are unlocked and ready for use right off the bat. The ultimate guilty gear game!!5
There have been so many iterations and rehashes of the guilty gear franchise, but this one is much more than a mere rehash. there are so many add ons and extra content in this game. The additions to accent core is that there is now a story mode for all the characters, and a mission mode, and kliff and justice have returned to the roster. Also there are extra versions of all the characters. There is also a gallery, and a special voice actor gallery where you can listen to voice clips of the various VA's in the game. An extensive soundtrack is also included. This is a must have for fighting game fans, and guilty gear fans alike.

Easily the best 2D fighter period.5
Insane characters with giant anchors, scalpels, pool cues, ghosts, guitars and chunks of concrete; lightning speed combo game play, head banging rock and roll music, and clean, sharp animations and graphic quality. This game is completely crazy, and if you are any sort of real fighting game fan, you will absolutely love every minute of it.

The final (supposedly) iteration of the famed Guilty Gear XX series, Accent Core plus is considered possibly the most balanced and fastest 2D fighter ever. AC+ is a re-release of 07's Accent Core, and while the same in the terms of game play that added several elements to the already tight system, it brings back enough content to keep both the solo player and the hardcore competitor entertained.

The game's extremely high learning curve is a put-off to many, but there's no room for quitters here, and the highest level of play clearly demands the best because of this. Even if you don't plan on entering any tournaments, the game is still easily entertaining to the fighting game newcomer with its short, quick dial-a-combos. It runs at a crisp 60 fps and moves like a cheetah. Every character can dash, airdash, double jump, chain attacks into each other and pull off ridiculously long and powerful combos that, while strong, require extremely strict timing and a heavy dose of focus to pull off correctly. Everyone has a realistic chance of winning while retaining a ridiculous amount of style and it shows.

Name another game with a small, female, 13 year-old pirate who fights with a giant anchor. Or a simple sad sack possessed to the neck by ghosts who fight on his behalf, knocking him unconscious at the same time? How about a 9-foot tall, insane doctor with an enormous scalpel and a "Mary Poppins Fetish"? Even an American, ex drug dealer ninja who thinks he's really Japanese and a time-paradox inducting alternate to the protagonist with a giant...slab of concrete are here. The game takes all kinds.

Guilty Gear is beyond amazing; it is legendary. Play it and you'll know a true fighter.

Good for both hard-core fans and button-mashers !!!5
I just got the game today and played for about an hour, so I'm not gonna go deep in details. However, I think an hour is enough for me to recommend this game to fighting fans.

If you have played GG X or XX before, you know what to expect. I can't compare it with the previous ones since I played them a long time ago. However, everything good about the series, as far as I can remember, is here in this latest installment.

If you're new to the series, this is the good chance to start. The game has great character/background designs. Characters are well-balanced. Combat is fast-paced.

The best thing is that the controls and special moves are pretty accessible to players on different levels. Button-mashers could get into the game enough to have fun with most of the characters, while elite players could still go a lot deeper and enjoy unleashing crazy combos and more complicated moves. There are a lot of modes to play, but I haven't tried them yet.

In conclusion, this game is definitely worth adding to your PS2 library. Serious fighters or not, you won't be dissappointed.
