Good game. Think twice if you're upgrading.4
NCAA Basketball 09 is a very good basketball game, but if you own a previous version of a college hoops game, think twice before spending the money to upgrade. I own "College Hoops 2K7" which I purchased for $5, and IMO this game is not all that different or much better. The biggest improvements are the graphics are a little better, and smoother. Obviously it is more polished and takes better advantage of the PS3 hardware than the older game. But for the fun factor, gameplay, and the college hoops experience, I find them equal. If you're looking for a college basketball game and don't own one, I recommend NCAA 09. If you're looking to upgrade from an older version, I suggest you rent first to determine if the high price is worth it.

Well worth the $ for me...4
This game is not without its flaws listed in other reviews. HOWEVER, as someone who is not a college basketball superfan, but still enjoys playing a basketball that might be a year out of date... this is perfect for me. First of all, I only paid $13 (its $8 now) which was $47 less than the 2010 version! I think I can wait til next year and get the 2010 version for cheaper while I play this game and repeat the process every year! Up to date rosters are not a must for me.

The gameplay is enjoyable and I really like playing dynasty mode where you have to start off as a coach in a much lesser known/ smaller program and have to recruit and play much better teams until you can get better job offers, etc. I really like this mode because its exciting to attempt and take a smaller school (NIU, Indiana St, etc) to the NCAA tourney. I'd reccomend it for sure for $8 to anyone who wants some college hoops in their life.

A Decent Game With Some Issues.3
I was pleasantly surprised when I started to play this game (it doesn't suck, and I basically like it). I had previously bought the PS2 versions, March Madness '08, and '06. Both of which I didn't like much (hectic, jerky, unrealistic gameplay). The PS3 graphics are good and the movement of the players is fairly realistic and natural. Also, if you are not trying to control a player, the CPU takes over and moves them where they should be. They won't stop dead in thier tracks like in NFL Madden or NCAA Football. But, stepping out of bounds is loosely enforced.
The stadium (only the playing surface looks like the actual stadium), and crowd graphics are decent for an EA Sports game. The in game commentary with Dick Vitale and Brad Nessler is good and not overdone and annoying like the PS2 versions. The school's fight songs are messed up. I was playing Wisconsin in the dynasty mode, but never heard 'On Wisconsin' played even once.
The big negative is the CPU will CHEAT, and CHEAT again!! The computer opponent will sink 3 point shots like nothing (while your team can't sink a "bunny" shot). Six foot guards will glide down the lane and slam dunk while your 7 foot center stands flat footed and doesn't challenge the shot. The CPU players will dash in grab an offensive rebound while your players stand and watch, Etc., Etc. You can be madly punching buttons on your controller trying to move players over, but the CPU players still dunk or grab the rebound with impunity.
A WARNING: My game disc has frozen up a few times after only about 10 hours of play! I exchanged the game, and the second disc froze up once, but hasn't had that problem after a number of hours of play.
The cheating by the CPU isn't constant, but it, and the freezing up, are the reason I gave the game three stars. I didn't care for the free throw shooting at first. You hold down the circle button until this 'meter' on top of the backboard goes from red to green, then you let off the button. The 'meter' is rather tiny and hard to see, and moves to fast. Eventually I did get the hang of it. Overall, a minor complaint.
The game menus are decent. If you have played EA Sports games before, you shouldn't have to much trouble navigating.
If you like college basketball this is a decently balanced game with good graphics, and fairly realistic natural movement.

    this rocks! like the others.5
the graphics are hot! non stop action if you like the other Duke games then you wouild like this game.

    Not Up to Par3
I agree with the previous comments on this new release. There are far fewer enemies and it doesn't require any skill to bump them off. You can see them from a mile away and can pop them very easily. A strategy guide, i.e., walkthru, is definitely helpful. Before I received the walk-thru, I gave up and quit Level 2 after trying for hours to complete the last objective (today I found the walkthru--available at: ...).

There are some features that I like which are improved from the Time To Kill game:

    1. There are new, cool, destructive weapons. 2. The select option to pick weapons, objects, communications, 3. The cheat menu on screen (although, there is no "all objects cheat").

Overall, it's ok to rent and play, but, I wouldn't pay ... to buy it.

    I love blowing stuff up!4
Duke is back and is as fun as ever. The guns are big and the aliens are cool. The graphics are hit and miss, but the levels have lots of secret areas to explore. Some characters look better then others, but the weapon effects are cool for a playstaion game. The levels are fun and well designed with fun missions like saving babes and hunting down lots of bad guys. Oh ya, and Duke is the man! Nuff said.

    A clear improvement over NCAA 08 in features/PS3 quirks4
I picked this game up to replace last year's version, and as a huge fan of college football I was pleased to see some neat additions (such as icing the kicker) that became a big part of the lexicon during last year's crazy season.

If you've played any of the games in the NCAA series, you know what to expect. Some new features for this year's version include "celebrating with the mascot" where you can run over to the mascot after running a touchdown and perform an animated celebration (mascot worshiping you/dancing around/etc.). The sideline players/cheerleaders/coaches actually exist this year, unlike in NCAA 08 when they mysteriously weren't on the sidelines during a game. You'll see cheerleaders dancing, players on the sidelines getting out of your way, etc. so the stadium atmosphere is much more alive than it was in last year's version.

Some new gameplay options are tweaks to the way running plays work. No longer can you just click 'go' and push forward, you can now find and exploit holes in the defense, you can get your offensive line to shift to one side to cover your option play, you can basically fine-tune your plays a bit more (as well as bluff your play art when playing side-by-side with a friend, something you couldn't do before).

On passing plays, you no longer have to worry about the AI intercepting the ball constantly. If they aren't facing it, they won't catch it. If you throw it directly into coverage though, do expect to be picked off.

Tackling has been upgraded, as has evasion. You can evade tackles if you know what you are doing, and you can also one-arm tackle, hit the player so hard they bust a flip and fall flat on their back, and basically do much more than just dive and pray like in NCAA 08.

Other neat features such as online dynasty mode, the ability to set up songs from playlists to play when certain things happen, downloading rosters, etc. give you much more in terms of having customization over your game.

Basically, each particular area in the game has been tweaked in just the right areas, and this is much more of a transition than 07 was to 08.

Bottom line: If they take what they have here and improve it for NCAA 10 then you can expect me to be a happy gamer for a while to come.

My only caveat with the PS3 version (I have both 360 and PS3) is that the controls are not quite as fluid. More often than not I was passing to the wrong guy, or lobbing the football like a girl. This is probably just due to the sixaxis way of handling the game, but maybe also because I was leaned back when playing and it probably didn't like that orientation. Otherwise - excellent choice for your system.

    EA Sports Does It Again5
NCAA Football 2009 is by far the BEST yet. Sure, there are still some areas that can be improved upon or fixed. But, the game play, crowd interaction, icing kicker option, and many many other things make this an impressive and incredible game. I have been playing this nightly and can't seem to get enough. This WILL have you screaming from your couch just like watching real NCAA football.

    COOL ITEMS:

    - Icing the kicker: Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but it's a cool and welcomed addition to the reality of football.

    - Turnovers aren't quite that easy: In 2007-08, picks and fumbles were all over the field. Now, having to be more aligned with the ball and needing a bit more skill, it's not a turnover free for all.

    NOT SO COOL ITEMS:

    - Celebrate with the Mascot: It's cool for the first few times but gets a bit repetitive or boring. Would be great if you could use select buttons to execute a celebration (or unlock celebrations with 'user' points

    - The graphics can be a bit "choppy". Someimes the ball magically moves out of the QBs hands or receptions go through a players head/arms. These glitches should have been fixed by now considering the technological & graphical improvements already made.

    - Guessing the defense when you turn the ball over? What does this really get you other than an intermission? And added feature would be gaining coaching experience points when getting it right in order to unlock hidden playbooks or even plays of the other team (game film for future games).

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE (IF EA EVER LOOKS AT AMAZON): User tackles and such don't do much for you: Would recommend making 'user points' like you get with Madden. Maybe then you can earn points toward player improvements, coaching improvements, or even buy things for your campus (a new library, new uniforms). Just would make it even more fun to knock around people and have interaction! Include this and a celebration addition and it'll be even greater!

Overall - I give this 5 STARS and recommend it to anyone that LOVES football. It's as real as it gets!

    An improvement over last year4
I was hesitant about buying this game after being disappointed in the last several years versions, but I will say this year is an improvement.

I like the improvements made with the recruiting assistance, the player graphics and animations are better, I like the way the pre-snap routes will be squiqqly when playing on the road in a hostile environment, the re-addition of the cheerleaders is a good thing, and just playing the game is funner than last years.

I am disappointed in the way the crowd looks though, and there are a few glitches that bug me as well, such as when you throw passes near the sidelines your player will tip-toe and stretch to make the catch and fall down, even if they're not right next to the sideline, and have plenty of open field ahead of them. There are still some things that they can be improved upon to make it an even more enjoyable game playing experience, but I still like it.

    Customer Reviews

Very dissapointed - solicits you for additional purchases2
I must preface this review by stating that I have been a fan of the NCAA Football series since it was "Bill Walsh Football". I have become accustomed to each year only having a few updates and modest improvements and those have been enough to satisfy my needs as a college football enthusiast.

THIS LATEST INSTALLMENT LEAVES MUCH TO BE DESIRED.

I play this game as follows: 50% of the time is spent in dynasty mode, 25% is spent playing against friends, 25% is spent playing online. With that said, dynasty mode is the mode that I obviously really focus on. I was alarmed to find out as soon as I booted up dynasty mode that it starts soliciting you to buy "add ons" that you would think would be standard. You have to pay an additional $2.50 per add-on ($12.50 for the total dynasty add-on package) -via the PSN store- to have things such as a second pipeline state, a recruiting advisor etc.

EA could have greatly improved dynasty mode this year by releasing these new options as standard features instead of gouging for more $$$.

It's not that the add-ons are expensive, but its that they are unwarranted and it is a matter of principle. I can honestly say that this will very likely be the last time I purchase a release from the NCAA Football series.

    Finally! A Worthy CPU Adversary5
EA Sports has finally made a challenging football game. Playing the CPU on Heisman mode is like playing last year's Madden on Your Level. The game now adapts to the way you play just like a real (good) coach does. You can't run that option over and over, you will get stuffed!

In addition to making CPU play harder and more realistic, there is a new mode called Season Showdown where you chose your favorite team and everything you do on and offline gets tallied toward an end of the season winner. In Season Showdown mode, you get points based on many categories including Skill (making certain plays yourself), Strategy (Choosing the upcoming play type while on defense and successfully stopping it), and Sportsmanship ( where good sports that don't go for it on 4th get points and those that do or run up the score get them taken away). There is also an online trivia component where you go to the EA Sports website and answer 10 trivia questions each week for points. During the season, each week you can play your team's game online against players from the other team to get points. You get points whether you win or lose, but you get more for winning. Season Showdown is a great way to show support for your favorite team and it also gives a rating so when you are in a lobby you can tell if someone who is participating in Season Showdown will go for it every 4th or not and if they know how to stop plays by looking at their Strategy rating.

Teambuilder is another new mode where you can go to the EA Sports website and create your own school and design the uniforms, stadium and player names and attributes and then download it into the game. And you can use your Teambuilder teams in online dynasties, which is pretty cool.

Online dynasties are better, you can now create a custom team conference by swapping your members teams with teams in an existing conference. For example you can swap all the Big 12 teams with all 12 of your dynasty member's teams. This makes it easier for scheduling user vs user games. They also fixed last year's bug where you talked a player into staying (from going to the NFL draft or transferring to another school) they and they still left. The recruiting process is more involved now, you can talk down other schools the recruit is interested ins attributes and you have a recruiting adviser that tells you when someone is ready to sign, is interested in your school or gets a call from a mom who tells some of a recruit's interests.

The other new addition is Road To Glory, which has been in the game before but is vamped up with a video segment on your player after winning games that is hosted by Erin Andrews, who discusses your play during the game with Herbstriet and shows auto saved highlights from the game. Look for a similar video show presentation in Madden NFL 10 which will have a video show for the online leagues showing highlights from members of the leagues teams each week.

    PROS

Season Showdown - It has brought a new sense of competition to the game, where everything you do helps your favorite school in the rankings.

Adaptive CPU Play - You have to really be on your toes to win against the CPU on Heisman mode now. All American mode is as hard as Heisman in NCAA Football 09.

Road to Glory - Your player is now ranked so you can see how others playing on your favorite team are doing. Plus you get to see Erin Andrews. lol.

Family Mode - This is another adaptation from Madden, which has an easy mode. Now, you can play a tough game against grandma. Family mode is a very simplified set of controls where even your sister can make a TD pass. So now, just about anyone can play and be good at it.

PS3 Trophies - For the first time you get trophies for your game play.

Tweaks to Graphics - Close ups are more polished, although most of the graphics are the same. Marching bands are now shown pre game and they have added additional uniform settings and TD animations (My team, USF, can now do the horns hand sign after TDs)

Players Are More Realistic - No More sub 4.3 40 yard dash players. Speed is not as much a factor as ability to catching or running through a tackle.

Ability to Tweak Team Play - Now you can tweak how your D and O play on different aspects such as blocking or tackling, with choices being Aggressive, Normal, And Conservative.

    Cons

EA has now gone the money route. Additional items, like "Dynasty Accelerators" where you get things like an extra pipeline state in Dynasty Mode you have to play for, WITH REAL MONEY! You want to be a 5 star high school recruit in Road To Glory? You can pay for it now, 2 bucks. If you lost your manual for the game, you won't be able to download your Teambuilder team to the game without paying for it. And if you want to download other teams you have to pay for each team. Its not quite as bad as they have done with Tiger Woods Golf, but look for more of it in future additions depending on how successful they are this year.

Adaptive CPU Play - I know, I said it was a Pro, but its both. I am seeing players struggling in Dynasties that are set at Heisman mode, good players. When someone is ranked high against other players (top 1000) plays a game against the cpu in Heisman mode with Penn St and loses to Akron, you know something is wrong. Luckily, the CPU sliders are still included in this addition. Sliders can be adjusted to so that CPU and User play can be adjusted, like increase the likelihood your receiver will catch balls or your QB will throw more accurately.

Graphics and Presentation - While I know that they have worked more on game play and features this past edition, it would be nice to see a better presentation. Not all the mascots are in 2010 yet, there are more in the PS2 version. Many of the lines of the commentators are the same they have used for several versions now. The graphics are pretty much the same, although you get a glimpse of some better graphics during the brief close ups after plays.

Putting your D on Aggressive Stripping the Ball results on face mask penalties on just about every play. Its pretty much useless.

The video is pretty repetitive in Road To Glory. Heck Erin doesn't even have a wardrobe change. It would be nice to see her change wardrobe, and spice up the video some.

Overall, great improvements to last year's game. Much of this is because Tiberon, who makes the game for EA Sports, let seasoned NCAA gamers have a day with the game early enough in development to get input and use it to change and tweak the game before it was shipped. They also did this to Madden this year.

UPDATE: The more I play Madden, the less I like NCAA 10. Why? On the harder settings its like work. And conversely, Madden is pretty fun, even when you are losing. On the harder settings in NCAA 10, one mistake can cost you the game. The game presentation is boring and rather dull compared to Madden. Even though I am #1 for my school in Season Showdown, I still am considering selling my copy. Hopefully next year EA Sports will take the things that work in NCAA 10 and Madden separately and include them in both of next year's offering.

    Fun Game, Bad Ideas2
I purchased each game in the series for many years. Not much has really changed in the last few years, so I didn't expect too much from this one either. The gameplay is imporved from last year dramatically. The CPU is more intelligent and seems to react to what you are doing better (such as coverage, play calling, audibles, etc). However there are time when you really wonder (such as when the CPU calls a quarter defense when you are in the goal line formation running the clock down). The graphics are imporved, however they are not as polished as they should be for a next gen game (at times they are SLOW). The plays themselves are a copy from last year, no change (could be negative or positive).

I mostly play the dynasty mode and that is where my main grips are. In order to be really competative in a online (or just a normal dynasty unless you choose the easiest settings or re-sim everything 20 million times to get perfection) you really are going to feel the need to buy those dynasty add on's. And those are where most of the controversies are. You just spent a ton of money to buy the game and now you have to go and fork over about a quarter of another ton to get all of the dynasty add ons. Once you get them, you come to realize many of them are just junk and do nothing. Why in the world do I care about an add on that gives me the time I spent with a recruit in a week? However the recruiting advisor however, does come in handy.

For EA Sports greed is the sole reason I think this game deserves a two star rating. Madden follows this 'charge more for add on's', as well as many of the other EA Sports franchises. If you purchase the game anyway, at least give EA Sports two cents about the extra money!!!

Enjoyable, but it could be better3
What is a good way for a gaming developer to make a lot of money with minimal effort? Release its flagship title for a newly released console, of course! This is exactly what Koei did with Dynasty Warriors for the PSP. Having established a great following with previous instalments on other consoles, the popular hack-and-slash game now finds itself among the launch titles for Sony's new generation handheld console. Not surprisingly, the game is very similar to the other Dynasty Warriors, but it's still an enjoyable game to engage if you're into action of this nature.

As in previous Dynasty Warriors games, gamers get to control various characters from the three kingdoms from, yes, you guessed it, the Romance of Three Kingdoms. You begin with fifteen characters, five from each kingdom, and each kingdom has its own story to progress. Of course, the characters have strengths and weaknesses, so choosing the one that represents you best is important, especially when you'll be spending a lot of time with him.

Apart from the main characters, you can bring along four officers with you into the battlefield. Again, each officer has his own unique abilities. Some provides healing. Some allows power boosts. Others make you move faster. You get the drill. Allocating the right ones is, once again, a personal choice depending on your playing style. For the record, I read somewhere that there are more than 200 officers in the game, so it could take quite a while before you can unlock them all. If you're a completist, don't be surprised to find yourself spending a lot of time on this game just to make officers appear on your menu. The Wi-Fi ability on the PSP also allows you to trade officers with your friends if you get tired of who is on your list.

Capturing a map in the story mode requires you to get from point A to point B, via a series of smaller areas. This is one of the main differences between the PSP version of the game and its previous versions. Obviously, Koei has taken the portability of the game into consideration, and has broken up the action into more scattered, but relatively shorter sections. Apart from an increased emphasis on strategies, the system actually serves as an incentive for players to play the game on the go. Maneuvering through a large battlefield may not be a viable choice when your train journey lasts only fifteen minutes. But to attack a small area that lasts for just a few minutes, and then save it and continue later? Why not? This makes it feasible for players to enjoy a little moment with the game without having to sweat over the prospect of ending the game abruptly when they reach their train station. If only all portable games are as thoughtful!

On more mundane issues, the gameplay is simple enough, even though simplicity usually means repetitive. You get the normal attack, charge and jump buttons, as well as a "musou" button, which allows you to do special attacks. Even though you also make use of the shoulder buttons, you'll spend most of your time with the four basic functions. Because of this, I've read many negative comments about the supposedly "idiot-proof" controls. I'm fine with it though, since it's easy enough to master instantly, and comfortable enough to use throughout the game.

The game is not without its flaws. In fact, there are quite a number of them. One of them is the occasional slowdown in frame rate. The slowdown doesn't interfere too badly with the gameplay, but if you're paying good money for the game, you'd expect better. Another issue with the game lies in its less than user-friendly camera angle. It's entirely possible to get yourself killed just because an enemy, who is just slightly out of the picture, is attacking you relentless while you're wondering where he is. Also, the problem with "ghost" characters is also evident here, as some characters appear on the screen later than other, even though they have been there all the time.

In summary, Dynasty Warriors should appeal to gamers who prefer a no-frills hack-and-slash. The controls are simple enough to allow anyone to pick it up and start right away, and the new battlefield system makes it possible to tackle specified areas without having to commit long hours just to clear a map. It's a pity that the fundamental issues of the game are not entirely addressed, making the playing experience a little less satisfying. Still, if you're a fan of the action genre, you may be able to look beyond the flaws and get a good time out of this game.

    Warriors is portable!!!!5
Just when you got tired of sitting at home in front of the tv playing Dynasty Warriors on your PS2, KOEI makes a portable version of it for the PSP!

Enjoy the non-stop action of Dynasty Warriors on your PSP. Select warriors from any one of the three dynasties (WU, WEI, and SHU) and select special unaligned characters including the legendary LU BU.

Fight your way across China in 7 different stages in Musou Mode or pick a fighter and train him in Free Mode. With 42 warriors to choose from and 200 different officers to have under your command, you can conquer China on the go!

Bottom Line: KOEI better make a second one soon!

    Dynasty Warriors for PSP5
This game is action packed and lots of fun to play.
What makes it different from the other DW games, is that you can choose your location and have 1-4 body guards.

    GameSpot Review
Why does it seem so damn hard to program a sound football AI? Arguably, there's never been a football game in which you couldn't find that gaping hole and drive your team right through it like a Mack truck, over and over again. You should be happy to hear that NCAA Football 99 is not one of those games. OK, there are few things you can exploit quite a bit, but play balancing is more to blame than AI.

Now, you might think football games are boring if you can't easily score close to 100 points per game. Fine, play NCAA Football 99 at the easiest junior varsity difficulty level and score all you like. But play it at the varsity level or especially the all-American level and you won't be completing bombs every time (just sometimes). In fact, computer opponents can be downright challenging. And if that team is considered one of your school's rivals, they seem to play even better.

When you're on offense, what you really have to watch out for are most teams' defensive ends. They usually have little trouble getting around your slower linemen who are trying to pass-block them. Ah-ha! That should be a hint to you when you're playing defense. If the computer is lined up in a typical two back, two wideout formation, take control of the weak-side defensive end (the one lined up to the outside of the weak-side tackle) and get ready to pounce on the quarterback. You might need to make a swim move, but usually you can get an unabated run at the quarterback. One of my defensive ends amassed 44 sacks and 71 tackles in the regular season! That's ridiculous. The next defensive player closest to him (besides the other DE on my team) had six sacks.

Fast linebackers are also a major nuisance. It's nearly impossible to run the ball outside if your opponent has them; and double trouble if they also have quick ends. Even if you have a speedy running back, you can't seem to get around the corner and turn upfield. (You can still have your usual share of success running up the middle, however.) Similarly, if you have speedy linebackers on your team, your opponent won't be able to run the ball outside on you either.

And that brings up a great aspect about NCAA Football 99: You can try to play the same way against every team you face, but there's a good chance you won't succeed. That means you actually have to make up a game plan by analyzing your next opponent's team, which is good. What's bad is player attributes (not game or season stats) are really inaccessible. The only way I could find to see attributes was from the Reorder Roster screen. You can also just start playing the game and see what kind of plays work, then keep using them.

Another great feature in the game is the dynasty mode, which is similar to season mode, except you're more like a newly hired coach with a five-year contract. Depending on the program you take over, there'll be constant pressure on you to win. When it comes time to recruit players, you can assign members of your coaching staff, including yourself, to recruit for certain positions. Obviously, your best chance at signing a blue chipper is if you send yourself, but you can still bag a budding young star otherwise.

NCAA Football 99 also has the full list of standard features, including a practice field and even a play and playbook editor. It's a pretty complete game and one that should satisfy just about any college football fan. --Tasos Kaiafas

    beginning of a dynasty5
this game really got me into ncaa football and its one of my top ten favs of all time.

    Cheap and fun4
The bad thing about the game is most of the time when you dive and hit the quarterback he wont go down. They also need to make better offensive plays. The good things are that you can create your own player and put him on wat ever team you want him to be on. Also when you run the option you usually get alot of yards. I recomend this game if you are someone who wont get frusterated if you miss alot of tackles.

    Not too shabby4
At this point, you either like the KOEI "mass battlefield" games, or you don't. Dynasty Warriors 6 picks up right where the others left off, with more of the same. Once again, we're thrown back into what sort of passes as Chinese history, taking up the roles of one of the Three Kingdom warriors and hacking our way to glory.

First off, the game has never looked better. DW6 is a clear jump up in graphics from even the recent Samurai Warriors 2 for the PS2, and the battlefields are familiar while looking much, much nicer. DW6 does a good job of making use of the PS3's heavy graphics horsepower, filling the levels with flowing water and leaf-dropping trees that actually are cool to look at.

Second, the combat is just as fun as ever. As always, one is able to slaughter entire fields full of enemies, collecting dropped bags of weapons and experience to crank up one's stats. Some of the weird DW affectations remain, such as squads of troops that mysteriously appear out of mid-air around you. All in all, however, the combat system holds up well even though it has basically been reduced to pure button mashing even compared to earlier versions.

Each iteration of Dynasty Warriors seems to add some good things while unfortunately removing some old standbys. For example, DW6 retains horses and even lets you level them up, permitting one to obtain strange steeds such as one that freezes anyone it runs over, or gives you a free weapon at the end of each level (presumably carried off in its teeth). Loose horses even run around on the battlefield smashing into people, instead of just standing around like idiots. Another new feature is a skill tree that is filled up with little skill points based on levelling, although there's really not much thought put into it. However, other items from earlier versions are sorely missed: new weapons do not appear upgradeable with money (indeed, there is no gold to be found) but instead are simply found as-is. Nor does one receive a bodyguard hireling who can level up; it's a horse or nothing. Having a bodyguard bomb thrower or monk who hands out life foods is sorely missed. Harkening back even further (DW 4, if memory serves), the inability to make a customized character or use a first-person bow and arrow still rankles. DW 6 adds the ability to climb up ladders onto walls or archer towers, but no ability to then use a bow to shoot people below. It's kind of silly.

Lastly, it's worth noting that the game is quite challenging. Even at the historically cream-puff "Normal" setting it is pretty easy to get murdered, notably by the over-juiced "fury" characters. I had an 18th level character with pretty good weapons get killed in two hits by some commander who wasn't even legendary tool Lu Bu. Interim saving is key even on the lower difficulty settings.

All in all, DW 6 is a good addition to your PS3 game library. I just dream of the day that KOEI puts good features into a DW game and DOESN'T remove all the good ones they'd added the prior time around.

    Old and New3
As someone who has every Dynasty Warrior game(Empires and Xtreme Legends included) as well as the Samurai Warriors, Warriors Orochi, Dynasty Warriors Gundam, and even the two PSP games. I think I can comment with some authority on this game. I like the visuals first of all. This is a big step up. The frame rate seems excellent as well. I encountered no slow downs in play. The addition of climbing ladders and swimming is nice. In turn the makers took out a few elements that I liked with leveling up weapons and bodyguards. The gameplay itself is basically the same thing you have been playing for years. If you are a fan of the mass battleground slaughtering enemies kind of game, then this is still going to be right up you alley. For me the story is getting a bit stale. I have seen the same time frames and characters a little too much now and I wish they would try something new. Still it is fun and I can easily recommend it to any Dynasty Warriors fan.

    Well done5
This is the first Dynasty Warriors that is actually fun to play. No more running back to your horse (you can whistle for it now), no more having to tediously kill all the gate guards to stop enemy reinforcements, no more having to kill hundreds of enemies hunting for meat buns (if you take a base now, it spawns food on a regular basis), mounted combat is now a feasible way of killing enemies, randomized loot, a fun levelling and advancement system, etc.

It's still all about mowing through waves of enemies and fighting enemy generals, but it's actually fun now, instead of tedious. I'd recommend it for anyone that got turned off by the older Dynasty Warrior games.

It's Dynasty Warriors. That is all.4
    Gameplay - 4/5
As any DW fan will notice, dw6 replaced the old combo system with the new Renbu system. You can essentially mash square and attack forever. They changed it a little from DW6, since now Renbu doesn;'t decrease overtime, and is dependant on weapon level. Also, the numerous Imbueings and Special Attacks you can stick onto a weapon add another level of depth entirely, and I perfer this to random drops any day. The combat styles range from narrow, low-body count motions to wide area base-clearing sweeps, allowing custom officers to be made as anything from a duelist to a master of one against many.

    Graphics - 3/5
I noticed right off that the quality of peons had decreased from DW6. The officer quality remains the same. I noticed later that this was to cram more characters into every level. For instance, I struggled to get 500KO in DW5E before any battle ended, but here I average 1200 or so.

    Sound - 3/5
I enjoy the empires feature to select your own BGM from almost any song from a previous DW game. However, the horrible Enlgish voices return yet again, making you wish for the Japanese voice option, or making you glad to set voice volume to 0.

    Replayability - 3/5
Replayability is the highest of any DW to date for me. Largely due to the initially frustrating fact that officer stats do NOT carry over from one play through to the next. Instead, you get clear points, which can be used to allow carry over of weapons, horses, and starting off with bonus gold or items. Once I played through twice, I found this enhances the raplayability for me. Also, there are numerous pieces of edit officer clothes to unlock by completing missions and playthroughs.

    Overall - 4/5
My favorite DW title to date. Best edit officer feature in my opinion. Love it!

Some things about this are great, and some not-so-great...3
All in all, I am pleased with the latest installment of DW:Empires. In fact, I enjoy playing it more than the original DW6. I would like to see some more innovation, but all in all, it's a fun title that should have had better bells and whistles.

    The Good:

    - The combat system. I love the renbu system. I can't imagine why someone wouldn't like it. I still can pull off the combos from previous games, but now I can continually attack. What's not to like?

Some of the power attacks are positively hilarious as well. I really like Meng Huo pulling up trees and giant mushrooms(???) to attack his enemies with.I'm also happy that Liu Bei has finally become such a power house.

    - The music is awesome. Not only are you treated to the tracks from DW6, but you get a HUGE selection of tracks from the previous games. All of them have the chinese ancient wailing guitars you have become familiar with, and I love it. Moreover, you can choose to listen to any piece of music at any time. Great nostalgia, and fun grooves as well.

    - This game fixes many of the problems from previous "Empires" games. One of the biggest problems with the previous games was that it was too easy to form alliances. Strategies are now based solely on the officers you currently have, and if you lose the officer, you lose the strategy. More could (and should) have been done here, but overall, the game is more fun to play, with both an "officer" and a "ruler" mode.

    The Bad:

    - Unfortunately, "Empires" fixes NONE of the problems from "DW6". The graphics are still lame, the map is way too small to explain some of the intricate passageways and whatnot, and Jiang Wei, Pang De, Zhu Rong, Da Qiao and Zuo Ci are still missing (among others, possibly). I hate KOEI's insistence of cutting things back in titles (look at the "evolution" of the RTK series). But the worst offender has to be the camera. It is just awful in this one, which is a shame, since the game itself moves at an incredible pace. It's a shame to lose sight of an enemy because the camera suddenly gives you a sky view, for whatever reason.

    - Moreover, while this rendition of "Empires" fixes some of the previous problems, it introduces a lot of new ones as well. Some strategies are grossly overpowered (Sun Quan can play a strategy which insures that he is never, ever attacked).

    The uninspired:

    - The trophies are a joke. You can get all of them in a matter of hours. I don't care much trophies, but you should have to work for something.

    New Dynasty Warriors4
The game is fun for Dynasty Warriors fans, but something about the smooth feel of the graphics and the changing of many of the characters makes it feel unfamiliar and loses it its fifth star, mostly because I was so used to old Dynasty Warriors.

P.S. Worst change: what is up with Lu Bu's strange fan weapon? Bring back the halberd.
