    Amazon.com Review
The Baldur's Gate series redefined and reinvigorated the PC role-playing scene, and now Interplay brings it to the PlayStation2. Don't be fooled, however. This isn't a traditional role-playing game, but rather a fun, wall-to-wall action hack 'n' slash adventure in the mold carved by Gauntlet and the storied Diablo games--one that nonetheless conforms to the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Third Edition rule set.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance casts you as one of three basic characters: an elf sorceress, a human archer, or a dwarf fighter. From there, you're set free inside a huge Dungeons & Dragons world replete with dungeons, forests, ice caves, and much more. Naturally, it's all filled to the brim with horrible monsters, wicked traps, treasures, and fabled magical weapons. As you go, you're constantly rewarded with new weaponry, new monsters to fight, and experience points you can put into your character stats to grow even more powerful. You can swap equipment in an inventory "paper doll" screen; those changes will be reflected in your onscreen character, so you'll start with simple weapons and a drab appearance, and you'll end up a big, mean superhero at the conclusion.

The graphics are simply wonderful, and the controls are accurate, responsive, and fun to use--which is necessary for the constant hacking and slashing required. The game is all the more fun when you recruit a buddy and play the game in cooperative mode. --Bob Andrews

    Pros:

  • Fast, furious fun with great graphics
  • It's even more fun with a friend!

    Cons:
  • Might disappoint PC Baldur's Gate fans looking for something deeper

Great Game. Very similiar to Diablo II.5
If you like hack & slash dungeon crawling games like Diablo, then you'll like this game. It is the first game of this style for the Playstation 2.

In this game, you play as one of three characters. You will be given quests by other people and creatures. These quests take you thru dungeons, sewers, caves, castles, woods, and mountain paths and usually involve killing a boss enemy or finding specific objects. Along the way, you must kill (or run from) enemies while picking up items (dropped by enemies, found in treasure chests, barrels, etc.) that may be useful to you or that may be sold. Fighting is in real-time (not turn-based as in Final Fantasy). As you complete quests and kill enemies, you gain experience. This experience allows you the change your character's attributes and learn new skills/spells. There are numerous types of weapons and armor to be bought or found during the game. As the enemies in the game get tougher, your experience and improved weapons/armor allow you to still put up a good fight.

The graphics and audio are amazing. The movement of water as you walk thru it and the movement of the leaves on trees as the wind blows shows the level of graphic detail that they gave the game. Also, the detail on many of the creatures in the game is outstanding. Voices and music are great. As you walk thru the woods, you hear coyotes howling in the distance. As you walk on the mountain path, you hear chunks of ice falling in the distance. Controls are simple and intuitive. Every button on the controller may be used during a game, but you'll find yourself using them like a pro in just a matter of minutes. I really like that fact that my character can change between a melee weapon (such as a sword) and a range weapon (such as a bow) during battle with the simple push of a button.

Gameplay is great and is almost identical to that of Diablo II. Unfortunately, the game is too short. Your saved games tell you how long you've been playing. On the Easy difficulty setting, I completed the game in about 12 hours. However, if you enjoy the game, you'll probably want to play each of the three characters and take at least one of your characters thru the three difficultly levels. Completing the game opens up something called the gauntlet where you have 15 minutes and one life to defeat all the various types of creatures (not too easy). Completing the game also opens up an Extreme difficulty level. Completing the game on the Extreme level opens up a fourth character. Playing a two player game is also a blast. It's just like the one player game, but allows two players to work cooperatively.

Don't let the shortness of the game keep you from trying it. I feel that this is one the best games for the Playstation 2 right now.

    D&D + Diablo = PS2 dynamite!!!5
Although it's set in the Forgotten Realms D&D universe, BG:DA features a gameplay style closer to Diablo than the Baldur's Gate games for the PC. I loved both series, so that makes me happy. And those who worried that BG:DA would be a tepid port of the PC games, rest assured that it is an all new, all different adventure.

The graphics effects and sounds are fantastic, and the soundtrack is as good or better. It's almost worth getting this game just to show off what the PS2 can do.

    A few caveats:

    - The game could be a bit longer, but the three character choices offer decent replay value. Still, it will leave you wanting more.

    - It helps to have a handle on how to use the gamepad. The controls aren't as simple as the point-and-click interface of Diablo and the original Baldur's Gate, but they are well designed.

    - Like Diablo, BG:DA is more of an RPG-lite experience than the original Baldur's gate. You only get to choose from three characters that are mostly pre-determined. It's still D&D enough to please me.

    - Also like Diablo, the hack and slash action can get a little repetitive in spots. When it looks and sounds as good as it does, I don't mind.

BG:DA is a different experience than the original Baldur's Gate games for the PC, but it's a good one. And you gotta love the gelatinous cube! Definitely recommended.

A good, but not great game4
As many others have pointed out this game is very similar to Diablo, only in 3D, and not as good. Which is not to say it's a bad game, it's not, it's quite good in fact, but its flaws keep it from being great.

First off I should say I've only played it all the way through as the Archer (you can also choose from the Sorceress or Dwarven Warrior) and only on the easy level. Be forewarned, the easy level is VERY, VERY easy - that's OK with me, these days I prefer my video games to be relaxing rather than frustrating, but if you're looking for a challenge use the hard setting.
On the easy setting it's easier than Diablo.

The things the game has going for it are:

    1) A good control scheme - this is really designed for the PS2 controller, rather than the awful controls you often get when a game is adapted from the PC

    2) Easy to get into, lots of places to save your progress - keeps it from getting annoying

    3) Nice graphics, good use of the 3D environment

    4) Simplification - they've removed things that can get tedious like having to have every item or weapon you find identified, and having to have them repaired - looses realism perhaps but I'd rather not have to deal with that type of thing in a game

    5) It allows you to play in whatever style you like - cautious and conservative, going back to town often to load up on healing potions and exploring every inch of the map, or wild and reckless, running through at top speed. Again this is similar to the way Diablo plays.

    On the down side:

    1) It's fairly short - I was surprised how quickly I got to the end, only playing it a few hours a week

    2) Not too much replay value - Diablo did this a lot better with more quests, randomized so you have to play it more than once to experience all the quests and randomly generated dungeon maps

    3) Arrows never really became an effective weapon, and for the Archer they really should - even at higher levels with a good magic bow and magically charged arrows it was still much more effective to simply hack and slash through with a good sword or axe

    4) The magic items you find stink right up until the end. At the very beginning of the game you start off with only basic equipment so the first few things you find are useful - after that though all the good items are in the shops - until the very last levels of the game (when you can no longer go back to the shops) when you find some decent things. There is plenty of gold to be found however, so at least you can buy the expensive items.

    5) Could have used MORE. More levels, more monsters, more weapons, more character classes. The monsters especially get a bit repetitive

    6) I would have liked to see a better mapping system. Again the one it's got isn't too bad but I'd have liked to be able to scroll through it and have a better representation of which areas I had explored and which I had not

    7) It would have benefited from a better explanation of some things - certain characteristics of weapons and spells aren't explained in the manual or the game itself - also could have used more customization options, this is a D&D based game, why can't I choose my characters race, sex, etc.

In conclusion it's an enjoyable game .... better still rent it - quite easy to finish in 5 days if you play it a lot.

    Stay Away from this game.1
Waste of Money. i bought it, played it for about 30 min., then went to a game store to sell it. the cover makes it look so good. the graphics suck, i was expecting something kinda close to NFS (need for speed), but i didn't come anywhere near it in graphics or gameplay. if you are new to racing games, stay away from this one and get either one of the NFS titles or midnight club.

    GameSpot Review
TOCA Touring Car Championship is basically a mix of Gran Turismo and Destruction Derby. It has the amazing control and physics of the former, while also having the realistic car damage of the latter.

TOCA features the eight official cars of the British Touring Car Championship: Volvo S40, Honda Accord, Audi A4, Vauxhall Vectra, Ford Mondeo, Nissan Primera GT, Peugeot 406, and Renault Laguna. You have eight tacks to race on that have been modeled after real-life courses. You can pick three different modes of play: the single race, time trial, and full season mode.

TOCA is one of the few racing games where the cars take damage. If you hit the wall a bit too hard, your hood might pop off. A really hard collision between two cars could flip a car over and put it out of the race. After a while you'll learn how to spin the other cars out of control with a little shove on their rear quarter panel. This, combined with 16 cars on the track, adds up to a lot of collisions.

The game's control works really well. You can use a regular PlayStation controller to play, but to really get your money's worth you have to play the game with a Dual Shock controller. The game controls are extremely precise. The physics model rivals that of Gran Turismo. The cars squat on one side when going around turns, cars spin out of control, and they have realistic reactions to collisions. Also, weather conditions like rain or snow affect car handling.

Graphically, TOCA is an above-average racer. The 3D-modeled cars all look like their real-life counterparts, as do the re-created raceways. The real beauty of the game comes from all of the little effects, like the mist that's kicked up from the tires when the track is wet. In addition, the lighting effect used for the headlights and brake lights really makes them glow as they would in real life. There is a little bit of pop-up, but it's barely noticeable. All of this racing action can be seen from four different camera angles: a chase view, a closer chase view, a behind-the-wheel view, and a windshield view.

TOCA's sound effects and music are quite good. The sound of the cars rubbing and scraping against each other is quite authentic, as are the other sound effects. The various musical tracks are all upbeat and keep the action moving. During championship races, an announcer with a very pronounced English accent introduces the race.

Overall, TOCA Championship Racing is one of the better racing games out there. It plays great, it looks great, and most importantly, it's fun. One of my biggest problems with a lot of racing games today is that they get boring after a while. TOCA has cool tracks, and with the car damage the game is just fun to play. Any fan of racing games should check out TOCA. --Ryan Mac Donald

If you like european type racing, you'll love this game!4
The graphics are great and the sound is dead on authentic, no cheesy whiring noises like some other big name titles. This is one game where rubbing and bumping is encouraged. No boo-hoo'ing here like in nascar. The dual shock functions are pretty cool on the curbs and when you bang or get banged with other rides. Hope toca 2 gets here soon!

    GameSpot Review
Last year's release of High Heat 2000 exists as an example of one of the worst PlayStation sports titles ever released. Unlike its PC cousin, the PS version was visually offensive, sounded abhorrent, and lacked any semblance of decent stat keeping. Undaunted, 3DO is back with this year's update, Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball 2001. With a year's worth of mistakes to learn from and the addition of Sammy Sosa's namesake, the 2001 release aims to offer baseball fans some modicum of redemption. As is true with every other console baseball title, you can choose from exhibition, season, home-run-derby, play-off, and player-editing modes. Do you want to create a seven-foot-tall power hitter and unleash him on the opposition? High Heat 2001 gives you the tools to do so, provided you don't mind replacing an existing major leaguer. Infamous to the High Heat series, family mode lets you play a quick game with the most forgiving of settings, making itself useful for those times when you have nonfanatic friends as your competition. Getting started is easy, the menus are concise, and the control interface is excellent. Depending on the simulation level you choose, batting, pitching, and fielding are tailored for various skill levels. On the lowest setting, a single swing sends the ball flying, and pitches require minimal effort in the presence of computer-assisted fielding. At the highest setting, pitching becomes a nightmare of angles and speed, batting requires painstaking precision, and fielding is nearly as difficult as the real thing. Though there are four levels of simulation, only the lowest and highest differ noticeably from one another. Regardless, High Heat 2001 offers precise control, responds quickly, and executes about ten times faster than last year's release. If there's any drawback to gameplay, it's not the controls or game mechanics but the lack of decent artificial intelligence. Without tricks, the game's four difficulty settings let you square off against a balanced computer opponent at your own skill level. Unfortunately, Team .366 left the game vulnerable to two of the oldest tricks in electronic baseball history, the low curve and the double-steal attempt. Regardless of difficulty level, the CPU will strike out time after time to curveballs low and away. Furthermore, if you get a man on first and a man on third, you can usually send them running and manipulate the CPU into giving you an extra base or an added run. Unless you're the type of person who can avoid such shortcuts, you'll be destroying the AI by 30 runs in no time. Visually, High Heat 2001 improves upon the previous release in hundreds of minor, albeit necessary, ways. Characters resemble human beings this year, and though they lack in polygons, they even animate with some level of realism. Stadium visuals, while remaining blocky, are also improved. Whether you play in Safeco Field, the Sky Dome, or the Ebbots Field of yore, at least the environs resemble their real-world counterparts. The polygon count is still a bit low, and the action does get blocky at times, but compared with last year's release, High Heat 2001 is beautiful. One has to wonder, though, why are the bases recessed into the field? It's silly to note that the developers couldn't spare an additional 20 or so polygons for realistically detailed bases, especially considering how wonderful the PC version looks. While Team .366 spent some time fixing the game's visual problems, the audio is still as sparse and uneventful as ever. Ted Robinson's play-by-play is repetitive and sleep inducing, sound effects lack enthusiasm, and the spectators drone on with a crescendo reminiscent of bad opera. Electronic Arts and 989 Studios can make baseball games that sound exciting, so there's no excuse for the bland audio that Sammy Sosa High Heat 2001 delivers. Although this game is not for everyone, it's safe to say that this year's High Heat will be a welcome addition to the game libraries of those who enjoyed last year's game. The gameplay is decent, many of last year's aggravating flaws are nowhere to be found, and the general feel of a baseball game is present. Unfortunately, the game's visual and audio quality remains far below what the competition offers, failing to bring about the same kudos that its PC counterpart is known for. --Frank Provo

Not as bad as the reviews would indicate4
This game has a tough road to climb. After a dismal previous effort (High Heat 2000), and good efforts from both MLB 2001, and Triple Play 2001 this year, this one just might get buried. But don't let the press fool you on this one, it's got substance.

First off, the graphics ARE subpar. That much is true. Either of the other two baseball offerings for 2001 will give you better visuals. BUT, if there's one genre of game where graphics are negotiable, it's a sports game, and especially a baseball game.

And while we're at it, no, this game bears VERY little resemblance to its PC cousin. No amazing roster management, no fully customizable renaming feature, though this is to be expected. Rarely do console games match their PC brethren in statistical/roster depth.

Now for the good stuff: the actual gameplay here is stellar. No more do you have to watch a batted ball take a familiar routine path to a certain spot on the field. In HH, the ball gets sprayed everywhere to all fields, simulating the real game better than any of its competitors. And fielding is accurate enough that balls hit to the wall result in the extra base hits that rarely happen in other titles. Pitch selection is diverse, with each pitcher having his particular arsenal of pitches. Batting is solid, along with baserunning.

Games flow at a nice pace, with just enough stats shown for flavor. Additionally, a few rare glimpses into the sport occur every once in a while. Case in point: I was playing as the Mets at Tropicana Field against the D-Rays, I smacked a homerun to right off of Chad Ogea, then I see the ball apparently come back out of the stands onto the field. I immediately thought, "must be a game glitch," then the announcer says "The ball has been thrown back onto the field!" It was great! The fans were jacked! I couldn't believe it, 3DO had enough insight to replicate the likes of the Bleacher Bums at Wrigley by having angry fans throw my homerun ball back on the field!

It's little things like that that will make this game a winner, even if it only manages to gain a smaller cult following. High Heat 2001 won't blow you out of your seat, but the fun-factor and level of realism are more than enough to warrant a purchase.

    Super Game!5
Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball 2001 is a very good game. It is very fun and enjoyable. The graphics are not the greatest but who cares? When you are having fun playing it you kinda forget about the graphics. The gameplay is awesome and I also like how it has a boxscore after every single game in the season for every team! If you like baseball I would fully recommend this game. High Heat hits a grand slam!

    GAMEPLAY NOT GRAPHICS4
I hear a lot of people most of them reviwers talk about this game very harsh I think this does a great job of captureing the feel of MLB baseball the graphics arent great but the gameplay is dead on its better than TP2001 its better than MLB2001 if you like simulation and tight gameplay this game is for you ps ITS SO REEEALLLL

Obviously the last review didnt play through the whole thing4
This game gets 10 times more interesting once you hit the other times and get past the medieval land the steampunk is awesome!!!

the quests also get more interesting than go to point a get this and deliver it to point b. so , while that last reviewers review was for the first area , once you get past it , it won't be dissapointing.

    This Epic Game ROCKS!!!5
This game came outta no where! What a pleasant surprise!!!

I don't know what dreamwarden was looking at when he played this game. I doubt he even played it through. "SHIFTERS" graphic's are as good as any other current PS2 title. The lighting and some of the atmosphereic effects are awesome...way beyond what you'd ever get on a PS1. The combat is actually very diverse because you're always getting a new character to morph, er... SHIFT into throughout the game. The movements of the characters are fluid and dynamic. Knockback and impact animations make combat even more realistic. The spell fx are as good as I've seen anywhere.

The game is huge. That, combined with the ability to choose various character paths such as a fighter or a spell caster enables you to solve the game taking different paths--being subject to different puzzles, enemies, and even different areas of the vast worlds presented in this game.

My only complaint is the story line isn't well depicted in the game, you have to decipher most of your motivation from the manual. And sometimes the AI characters 'fell asleep'...but that was rare. Perhaps that is part of the stealth mode for sneaking up behind your enemy and delivering a single devastatingly fatal blow. But, for me personally, those are minor quips. If you're done with FFX, GTA3, and DMC, then give this one a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

    Sad1
This game is more of a first-person "shooter" than an RPG. The "quests" in the game lack any sort of depth. There is no real reason to follow any of the quests except for the main quest.

    Pros:
.... hmmm.... wait.... let me think....
    - oh wait I did like some of the spookier environments.
    - you can save game anywhere.

    Cons:
    - Loading level after level is slow
    - Game play is very very repetitive
    - Shape shifting isn't really that interesting
    - Quests don't yield much
    - Frequent camera control problems
    - Cheats do not let you acquire all the shapes so you have to play thru the extremely dull game to get them.
    - Buggy- program froze on me several times.
    - Unclear what some of the gatherable items do for you

Ready for Vegas, baby? If you aren't able to catch the next flight, consider Vegas Games 2000 instead. With seven classic casino games, you can gamble away the night without emptying your bank account. Multiple players (up to four) can choose from poker (five- and seven-card stud, five-card draw, jacks or better, Texas hold 'em), blackjack (one, two, or four decks), baccarat, craps, and roulette. Single players have two additional choices: slot machines and video poker (double down, jacks or better, jokers wild, 10s or better, deuces wild). Watch out for your computer poker opponents--they love to bluff. Fortunately, your computer opponents will occasionally make mistakes.

Vegas Games 2000 does not allow you to walk the floor, so you'll miss out on the unique Las Vegas atmosphere. Nonetheless, the menus are easy to read with colorful logos and images, and the games load quickly. The soundtrack to the game consists of an ongoing loop of gamblers celebrating, sighs from the agony of defeat, coins dropping, and levers being pulled, which can get repetitious. Suggestion: turn off the game audio and crank up some Frank Sinatra. --Kasty Thomas

    Pros:

  • Good variety of games
  • Extremely helpful manual
  • Supports multiple players, good for group fun

  • Cons:
  • Soundtrack becomes repetitious

    Warriors of Might and Magic

    Warriors of Might and Magic

Warriors of Might & Magic brings us back to Enroth (last visited poor Crusaders of Might and Magic for the PlayStation), and gives us a world filled to the brim with dungeons populated by mortals lack. It represents a warrior Allerona accused of the crime of necromancy, which is forced to use a hideous mask held in place by digging her nails into my face (shudder). So, to make matters worse, he threw into the pit of the damned and must find a way to break the curse and remove the mask.

    Amazon.com Review
Warriors of Might and Magic returns us to Enroth (last visited in the lackluster Crusaders of Might and Magic for the PlayStation console), and gives us a world filled to the brim with deadly dungeons populated by foul creatures. You portray Alleron, a warrior accused of the crime of necromancy who's forced to wear a hideous mask that stays in place by digging its talons into your face (shudder). Then, to add insult to injury, you are flung into the Pit of the Accursed and must fight your way out to break the curse and remove the mask.

The drawbacks are obvious at first glance. The graphics are a little under par for the PS2. Everything looks kind of washed out and drab, and the animations are jerky and stilted. Certainly the PS2 is capable of better than this.

The rest of the game consists of fighting, jumping puzzles, more fighting, magic use, and collecting better armor and weapons by way of, well, more fighting. The puzzles are fairly easy--except perhaps the jumping puzzles--but the combat is fast, furious, and fun. As combat is 90 percent of this game, it's easy to recommend Warriors of Might and Magic to people who are itching for action. --Andrew S. Bub

    Pros:

  • Lots of hacking and slashing
  • Interesting environments

    Cons:
  • Bland graphics
  • Slow, stilted animations

    GameSpot Review
Looking to strengthen its already robust initial PS2 offering, publisher and developer 3DO Company is busy cooking up Warriors of Might and Magic, a third-person adventure that's similar to its earlier Crusaders of Might and Magic. Set in the classic world of Might and Magic, Warriors puts you in the role of Alleron, a tragic-enough hero, on a mission to set right a number of travesties that were falsely committed in his name.

Much is amiss in the land of Ardon: Draconian laws and necromancy, among other godless acts, are the order of the day, of which Alleron wants no part. What's more, an ancient, evil god - a dark deity whom Alleron has made it his business to vanquish - has been stirring anxiously, as of late, eager to walk again, and feast upon the souls of men

The game's narrative will be conveyed through a blend of FMV (judiciously sprinkled, one can hope), in-game dialogue, and scripted scenes, which will utilize the game's engine.

According to 3DO, Warriors of Might and Magic will not only feature a number of great details that are geared toward immersing you into Alleron's world, but it will also offer you many opportunities for rich gameplay.

Of foremost concern, doubtlessly, are the game's combat systems. Admittedly influenced by a tradition of fighting games, 3DO hopes that WoM&M's deep system will mimic the depth and style of the games by which it has been inspired.

Alleron has three basic attacks: a jab, a swing, and a lunge, all of which can be segued into various combos. In the form of specials, there are a shield-check and a jump-attack. The shield-check can sometimes penetrate enemy blocks, while the jump-attack is verily unblockable. Alleron will do battle with a host of undesirables, including hellhounds, ghouls, and orcs, in addition to more familiar foes, such as assassins, evil magi, and unholy cultists.

The combat system also allows for defensive tactics. Alleron can block attacks 90 degrees in front of him. An enemy whose attack is blocked will be momentarily stunned, which will allow Alleron a quick counter-attack. Alleron can also move while maintaining a block, but his movement rate will be thusly diminished. Also at Alleron's disposal are dodges, ranging from hops and flips, to rolls. These dodges must be timed correctly, lest they fail. Though, when successful, they allow for swifter counter-attacks.

As the conventions of the genre dictate, magic will play a major role in Warriors of Might and Magic. 3DO promises graphically spectacular magical effects throughout the game. From Alleron's personal repertoire of spells to environmental objects imbued with magical effects, WoM&M is reported to be replete with all things mystical, though don't expect any handy healing spells: Says 3DO, "A healing spell would be used constantly and would rapidly become trite, so healing occurs by drinking potions and through the aid of benevolent NPCs."

In truth, 3DO has much to say about WoM&M's graphical capabilities. While we don't intend to bore you with technical details, we can assure you that 3DO promises that Warriors' engine will take full use of the PS2 graphical prowess, dishing out, at times, more than 20 times the sheer number of polygons than the PlayStation version of Crusaders. With features in play, according to 3DO, capable of rendering realistic facial animations, smooth environmental effects, and ultra-expansive environments, among other things, it's safe to say that Warriors of Might and Magic is something we're itching to see in motion.

Needless to say, GameSpot will stay on top of this one, so keep your sights here for the latest info. Warriors of Might and Magic is scheduled for release shortly after the PS2's stateside launch. Once we get our hands on something playable, rest assured that we'll be forthcoming with info. We hope these screens can tide you over.--Miguel Lopez--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. Warriors of Might & Magic...4
A spin-off of the long-lived "Might & Magic" series of PC games, and a psuedo-sequel to "Crusaders of Might & Magic," "Warriors of Might & Magic" is a better action/adventure than the aforementioned, but it is still far from perfect. With all of the other fantasy-themed hack-and-slashers out there, "Warriors of M&M" has its work cut out for it. Here is what the game does well:

    · The graphics may not be the best in the business, but there are plenty of snazzy colors that catch the eye, and each new environment generally has something different to offer. Having just finished "Drakan: The Ancients' Gates" a few weeks ago, it is nice to find some variety in the visuals. Although "Drakan" is astoundingly beautiful out of doors, the indoor dungeons become very repetitive, and offer only a few different textures.
    · "Warriors of Might & Magic" throws new foes at you almost every time you enter a new area, which works wonders on the pacing of the game.
    · The voice-acting and rendered cut-scenes are pretty well-done. The hero of the game, Alleron, may not have any backstory to speak of, but the actor that portrays him breathes some life into an otherwise dull character.
    · "Warriors of Might and Magic" offers a variety of weapons, armor, and shields for you to choose from, and most of them are quite nifty. Weapons like the "double-mace" come in handy for pounding your foes into dust.
    · As Alleron slays his enemies, he gains experience points which he can use to make himself mightier, faster, smarter (which is handy for casting spells), or more durable in combat. This seemingly crude dab of role-playing really does keep things from becoming boring.

However, "Warriors of Might & Magic" is certainly not to be everyone's cup of coffee. While I enjoyed my stay within the world of Ardon, I did encounter several annoyances that kept me from complete and total addiction. They are as follows:

    · The graphics are crisp and colorful, yes, but once Alleron heads outside, it all gets pretty ugly. The game's engine is clearly more adept at producing garishly lit dungeons (albeit pretty ones) than it is at capturing wide, open spaces. The few levels in the game that attempt to depict outdoor locales are pretty darn bland.
    · Alas, not all of the indoor locations are pleasers either. The dungeon quality is all over the board. Some areas are atmospheric and interesting, while others are dull and unconvincing in every way. The best locales come later on in the game, though, which should add that extra bit of incentive.
    · Combat in "Warriors of Might & Magic" is extremely basic, though somewhat enjoyable at times. Alleron can lock onto his enemies, attack them, and defend himself from attack as well. As long as you hold the defense button, you're untouchable (provided you're facing your foe), and the same is true of your opponents. Combat animations are also pretty scarce, so it leaves something to be desired. On top of that, fighting multiple enemies at once is a nightmare. What I wouldn't give for a "Mark of Kri" fighting system in multiple opponent situations!
    · Enemy AI is weak, to put it gently. Your enemies generally just stand there as you pound on them, or if you decide to run from combat, don't expect them to care all that much about chasing you. It's inconsistent behavior, though. In some instances, monsters will pursue you until you're cursing in frustration - but most of the time they'll just give up and return to their posts as if nothing at all is amiss. Still, the game can hardly be considered a cakewalk as a result of its poor multi-opponent fighting scheme.
    · There are a lot of "find this key" and "pull that level" puzzles. Blah.
    · Though the locations in the game are thankfully diverse, they don't always make sense within the context of the (very slim) storyline. For example, after escaping the confines of a minotaur-infested underground city, Alleron appears in a monestary that's being attacked by undead. Naturally, the monks want Alleron to exterminate all of the undead before he can move on to the next level. This has nothing to do with the overall plot, and it is pretty jarring as well. "The Mark of Kri" always explained where you were going and why, and the knowledge would have helped "Warriors" to gel.
    · NPC interaction is severely limited. For some reason, most NPCs talk in gibberish with subtitles. Worse, they're not big on dialogue. For example, "Find my magic rune and my magic staff and I'll give you a key." That's it. And then there's the merchants, who hang around in the craziest of places selling their wares. Why would a merchant sell his goods only a few feet from a hellish cult's evil temple? Goodness knows - and they won't tell you. In fact, they don't say a word.
    · There's a very annoying glitch later in the game that will force you to visit the "Warriors of Might & Magic" website Q&A for a solution (unless you're really, really lucky).
    · Final boss is a letdown.

As you can see, the list of negatives outweighs the list of positives. Despite this, however, "Warriors of Might & Magic" can be addictive in its own curious fashion. Despite my niggles, I kept playing... and playing... and playing. I can see how "Warriors" wouldn't satisfy just any gamer's needs, but for those who can get past its problems, there is some fun to be had - especially given the price, which is nearly pocket change now that the game has been on the market for a while. If you like hack-and-slashers and have some time to kill, you could do worse.

Final Grade: C (or 4 stars at [Amazon.com] on a curve - it's not as bad as some would have you believe, after all...)

    This game is a Blast!4
This is a really fun game. I bought myself a PS2 for Christmas, and some of the early games, but I found them to be short and the gameplay was disappointing. My girlfriend bought this for me last week as a present, and we've been playing ever since. The game started out pretty slow, and the controls took a while to get used to, but after 20 minutes, I was running around picking up stuff and fighting these big green trolls and swarms of insects in this really creepy dungeon. There are tons of items to collect, swords and shields, and magic potions, as well as a bunch of cool spells that you can use to fight with. I like to use the swords and maces to beat everyone up and my girlfriend prefers to use the spells. Her favorite is the ring of fire that gets everybody around her. Savegame is cool as well, since it has a picture of where you were, so we can switch and not confuse our games. Puzzles aren't too tricky, but they make a good break in the combat. Story is pretty simple, a mix between Conan the Barbarian and Evil Dead. Graphics in the first level are pretty drab, but later on, there are some stunning levels. So far we've seen about 20 or 30 different kinds of monsters to fight. Like I said, it starts out slow, but just keeps getting better and better. Best fighting/adventure game on the PS2 so far. Not a 5 star, better than 4, but there is no 4 and a half.

    Fun, Action Filled Adventure Game5
I have never been a big fan of quest games for the playstation or nintendo. I typically prefer to play these types of games on a computer. Warriors of MM however is an alsome combination Hack-n-Slash and Quest game. I think the storyline is good (not great), but the controls and fighting are alsome. The monsters are cool (If you are a fan of D&D type fantasy), the graphics are beautiful, and the sound is good. I have been playing this for 4 days now and my wife wants to play when I'm done! This is highly unusual as she typicaly hates ever game I play (Except Spyo) :p So if you're a fan of Hack-n-Slash and/or Quest games, I highly recommend you check this game out.

    JMMT is not so bad...4
First off, if you compare this extreme skiing game to SSX (or SSX Tricky), JMMT doesn't come close. But, since this is the only skiing game out there right now for PS2, it's definitely worth a look.

The jump, grind, and trick schemes is almost exactly like SSX, so if you're familiar with that scheme, you'll pick up Mad Trix in no time. Some of the tricks are not so realistic (especially being able to do mistys and rodeos without a jump) and not as fluid as those in SSX.

The courses are based on snowy versions of real-life venues (San Francisco, Las Vegas, Rome, Washington DC...) and I thought they were pretty well designed. Lots of jumps, rails, and boosters to be found.

There is also a ski school & freeride to get you acclimated to the courses. Sound is OK, with the good music balanced by the announcer who sounds like Lurch from the Addams Family. Luckily, you can turn him off.

All in all, even though it's not up to SSX standards, the main reason why I like Jonny Moseley's Mad Trix is that I picked this game up much quicker than SSX, and my scores on JMMT were higher more quickly. I think it's because the racing is a bit slower than on SSX, so I had just a split-second more time to think about (and pull off) my next trick. If you like racing games with trick elements, definitely try this one.

    Awesome5
This game is the bomb. IT has spedtackular tricks and awesome 3D graphics. The makers of this game are genius. Every kid in the world should have this game. Ihope 3DO comes out with other awesome games. A lot of the people in my neighborhood have this game inclding me. I think this game blows out any game. THis game is AWESOME!

    JMMT a SUCCESS5
Finally a game for skiers! This game is extremely fun to play, and you will find yourself loosing hours playing it. The only bad thing about it are the game controls can be awkward since you can only steer your player with the left analog button, and you control the players jumps {rotations, flips, ect.} with the d-pad. Also, some may not like that it's only a one-player game. Lastly, it's a great introduction to the new world of skiing {freeskiing}. Ultimately it is SSX {show-off} on sticks.
