Good pick up and play game4
This is the first game of the Virtua Tennis series that I have played, but I had heard some good reviews of the game, so I decided to pick it up. It is definitely more of an arcade game that you can pick up and play fairly easily than a more complicated similuation game, which makes it a great game for a portable system like the PSP. You can play it easily enough without much practice and yet there is enough depth to the controls to make it more fun as you continue playing.

The career mode is pretty decent. There are lots of mini-games and training games as well as tournaments to enter. My main gripe about the tournaments is the jump in your opponents' skill level from one level to the next. In the first level, your opponents play so badly that you can easily win an entire tournament (3 matches) without losing a single point. Yet when I jumped up to the next level, I was lucky if I could win a game in the first match.

One thing I've noticed while playing the game that can get really annoying is the slow down that can occur occasionally. Usually this happens during the mini-games if there are too many things moving around on the screen all at once. It might also occur during doubles matches when there are four players running around instead of just two. But I have had the frame rate drop drastically while simply playing a singles match. I basically lost an entire match because of this once because the game would slow down so much that I would hit the shot button too early and my player would just stand there instead of running to the ball, causing me to lose several points.

This negative aside, the game is overall a very satisfying experience. It's a great game for the casual gamer who needs the occasional fix of gaming on the go.

    Virtua Tennis 35
This is a pretty fun game. I beat it in about 3 days after playing the first day and then getting instantly hooked. There is one gripe about the game though, you constantly play the same opponents. Ranked 300 in the world you play Andy Roddick and you play him again ranked 15 or so. Of course he is much harder when you're ranked 15 or so but that aspect makes it unreal. Other then that its a very good buy.

Very fun, as long as you don't expect great game play4
I've yet to come across a tennis video game that has great or even good, realistic game play and Virtua Tennis 3 is no different. Simply put, there are virtually no unforced errors, way too easy to lay out and dive for a shot and get it back no problem (multiple times per point) and no matter how good of a server you're playing with and how well you hit the serves and place, it's impossible to dominate with your serve. You can hit a 135 mph serve up the middle and the computer slap it down the baseline for a return winner or at least to put you on the defensive. This happens way too much.

Some other quibbles with the game, in World Tour mode in every tournament you get to serve first and you don't have to win the set by 2. All you have to do is hold your serve and you win the match. Pretty stupid if you ask me. That and the lack of stock players available for the game, you play the same guys over and over again only they get remarkably better over night.

With that said, if you're not expecting much in the gameplay/realistic simulation aspect, this is a very fun game. The mini games are all fun, the World Tour mode is solid and it can be surprisingly addicting. Before you know it you've been playing for a couple hours.
