Poor craftsmanship. Buyer beware.
So, I was doing alright with my DS3, but not reaching my full potenital in SFIV. So I decided to check out the FightPad, and I admit I was initially impressed. The six-button face makes combos much easier to pull off, the floating D-pad makes Specials, Supers and Ultras much easier to execute, and the clicky shoulder buttons are much more precise than the triggers on the DS3. My performance improved sharply (though not phenominally). I paid retail (40 bones). It seemed good for the money.
After 2 weeks of normal use, the headaches began.
1.) My fighter began throwing random SPs or FPs (Triangle or R1) for no reason, without input. It happened very rarely at first, but became increasingly more frequent over a few days. If I was trying to duck/dash, this would often result in random Shoryukens/Hadokens/whatever, opening me up for maximum punishment. IRRITATING to the MAX.
2.) The RK (R2) button became more resistant than the other face buttons, making combo timing a strange affair. Not critical, but annoying.
3.) My PPP button (L1, left shoulder button) stopped working entirely. I discovered this while in the middle of a ranked match using Gouken. I encountered several situations where a Shin Shoryuken would have clinched the win, but the controller would not heed my commands, and I got plowed because of it. This effectively made any character requiring a PPP Ultra Combo input useless (unless I changed button configs between every fight). EPIC FAILZORZ.
Conclusion: MadCatz FightPad is an awesome and tempting concept executed with POSITIVELY AWFUL CRAFTSMANSHIP. At least I got a couple weeks' use out of it, but it's as good as garbage to me now. Shame on you, MadCatz. How the hell am I supposed to trust your expensive TE stick now? In fact, I doubt if I'll trust anything you make again.
I am now waiting for a new Hori stick to come in the mail. I've been goofing around with control pads for far too long already; I need a stick to really contend out there.
COMBOS!
Madcatz has made a decent controller. It's much better than the Sony controllers for pulling off special moves and difficult combos. It also doesn't hurt your thumb during prolonged use. The turbo feature is a nice addition and helpful for certain characters. I like the fact I can use it with my entire PS3 Street Fighter library. I also have the Ryu version and haven't had any problems with either controller after a month of use.
Good for most, but not all characters...
This is an outstanding controller. Very comfortable to hold and all buttons are in easy reach. It is already perfectly set up for use with the Street Fight IV & the default button configuration. Moves requiring quarter, half & full circle movements are incredibly easy do, thanks to the floating digital pad. And they can be done consistently. It comes a with handy Turbo button which makes characters like Chun-Li & E. Honda especially dangerous.
My only problem with the controller & its floating digital pad is that it may be too sensitive sometimes. For characters that require charge attacks or precise up and down movements of the digital pad for combos, the Dualshock 3/Six-axis controller is actually easier to use & more consistent.
If you have PS3 then you already have the standard controller & I highly suggest you try out the Fight Pads to get the most out of this game. It will probably come in handy for other fighting games as well. I fully intend to use this pad on Tekken.
