This game is a steal!
Let's see, for $7 you get more content than almost every other PSN game out there: Adventure mode has 80 levels, Puzzle mode has 100, and Challenge mode has... well, I can't remember right now, but it was a lot! And you've got some of the best multiplayer in a puzzle game since Dr. Mario.
The gist of Critter Crunch is that you feed smaller creatures to larger ones to make them explode (and eat the delicious jewels that come out of them). You can do the usual combo thing with games of this type to get big bonuses, which is essential in the frenetic multiplayer. What makes the game so unique is all of the interesting power-ups and special critters that appear later in the game. The writing is also fantastic and hilarious, and you'll find yourself having a good chuckle the whole time you're playing. The main thing I enjoy about this game is that the adventure and multiplayer modes are fast-paced blast, but you also have the slower, more cerebral puzzle mode to slow things down when you need to relax.
This game is a must-own for all PS3 owners, especially those who enjoy puzzle games!
Great value, great fun, great puzzle game
Critter Crunch is a new puzzle game which is based on the somewhat weird premise of feeding smaller critters to big critters. The game has its own brand of quirky, odd humor, which really fits in well with the artistic style of the game. Everything about Critter Crunch exudes quality. The game looks fantastic, the controls are intuitive and precise, the puzzle aspect is quite deep, there's a huge amount of content, and the online multiplayer is handled well.
There are several different gameplay modes in Critter Crunch (adventure, puzzle, challenge, survival, online) which all use the same core mechanics but have different objectives. The difficulty of the game starts out really easy, and adventure mode gently introduces you to new mechanics, but by the end of each of these modes there are genuinely hard levels. The price of the game makes this a great buy for anyone with even a remotely passing interest in puzzle games.
Åt this price, we're ripping them off!
I love puzzle games. Tetris Attack, Bust-a-Move, Chu Chu Rocket, you name it. After downloading the demo for Critter Crunch, I knew I had to buy the full game after the first level tutorial. Now THIS is how to make a new, memorable puzzle game. Eventhough it's still very new, I can see this one having good staying power and getting a few sequels down the road, provided enough people support the game and actually pay for it. And how can you say no to cute, fat little critters?
Critter Crunch is simple to play, but a heck of a lot of fun to learn everything in and out. You play as Biggs- the tubby lil' guy you see in the picture, and you feed critters to other critters. All of the critters are above you in rows, and it kind of plays like Baku Baku or Super Puzzle Fighter. If there's an insect, you feed it to the appropriate critter, and feed that one to another, etc. After feeding two (or another critter that's been fed once) critters to another, that critter blows up, and takes down like-critters with it. As they blow up, they drop crystals that fill up the meter on the screen, and once that's full, you complete the stage. And provided that the requirements are there, you can get some powerful food bonuses like peppers that burn rows of enemies, watermelon seeds that just plain take out enemies with one shot, and more. And of course, if you get a good combo going, you can vomit a rainbow of fluid into your baby's mouth, earning more points. Trust me, it's charming.
There's your standard adventure mode where you complete all the levels on the map, unlocking other modes along the way. There's actually a good number of stages to complete, and this alone makes the game a steal, even at full price, when you consider that there are more levels than those from the old puzzle games that we'd pay a pretty penny for in the 90s. Puzzle mode challenges you to complete a stage by using a predetermined number of moves. Challenge mode has you sticking to specific goals like clearing critters with a combo of 3 and so on. Then there's the online mode where you can complete levels with a partner (online or on the same console) or compete head to head in VS mode. Finally, there are a couple of trophies you can get in Critter Crunch, none of them being too challenging to get, but they're still fun to try for.
The graphics are beautiful and run smoothly. Sometimes it looks like you're watching a cartoon, and not a cheap flash animation-ish one either like you see a lot of these days. There's no slowdown either, and the sound effects match what's going on perfectly. The music's good too, though I didn't pay attention to it most of the time because the game sucks you in so much that all you can pay attention to is potential combos once you get going.
The fact that this game's only being sold for this much is absurd, but I'm not complaining. It's worth even 5 times the standard price. If you like puzzle games and want something new with great presentation, look no further than Critter Crunch.
