great music and family-friendly puzzling fun, perfect if it had trophies
The first thing you'll notice after downloading LocoRoco is the music. A version of the main song plays when you select the game in the XMB. If you find the song making you smile, you'll probably like the game. My only real complaints are that the game doesn't have trophies, and it can be ambiguous as to if you've found enough of the creatures. For very young children, just getting the first LocoRoco to go through the machinery and follow her/him/zim around with the camera will keep them amused for hours.
The game itself is loads of fun, but without a decent tutorial, it can take a number of sessions to realize how deeply you have to explore the environments to find more LocoRoco. The success criteria is a little ambiguous, but it is really fun to play and very accessible. The use of 1080p native graphics and vibrant colors makes this visually nice game, even if the art style doesn't really demand it. (Note: If using an HDMI connection to your HDTV, make sure you have "Full Color Range" turned on in your PS3's Display settings.)
Loved:
-the music, and how new voices come into it as different colored LocoRoco appear on-screen
-relatively straightforward, accessible gameplay
-simple, but beautiful graphic design
-very young kids can get the hang of the simple aspects very quickly, and do very little to see the LocoRoco flow through the Rube Goldberg-type machinery.
-great price for the content provided
Meh:
-lack of trophies contributes to the lack of clear goals (and how to achieve them) in the game. this was an early PSN title so the lack of trophies is excusable, but if Sony patches it to add trophies (like they did with Lemmings), I will definitely play through again
-while I do love the music, I wish it was lossless quality. to my ear, the quality sounds like a medium bitrate AAC. I am probably one of a few people who will notice this, but games like Critter Crunch that have lossless audio are providing more value for the price point.
Hated:
-lack of tutorial means looking at online videos to learn how to get LocoRoco to stack up *correctly* and other essential gameplay mechanics
-not knowing if I've found all the LocoRoco in an area. I played through 4 or 5 times, still not getting all of them in the end.
Wishes:
-trophies, trophies, trophies.
-a tutorial that guides you through stacking and other mechanics, or just better in-game documentation.
-local and/or online co-op play with time-based leaderboards would be an absolute blast.
Recommended.
Maybe the best PSN game
Hard to believe this didn't get all 5 star reviews! This is not a destructive games or first person shooter. It is very easy to complete the game---PERFECT for younger gamers, yet it will challenge any gamer to save all of them. The game can be completed in a few hours, only after you have played it through a few times and learned what to do.
Great replay --- Just because it's FUN!
Fantastic music too (I bought the LocoRoco soundtrack).
Nothing like Locoroco PSP
I bought this game for my girlfriend because she looooved LocoRoco for the PSP (and hates most other games). But when I got her this, it was nothing like the PSP and she (or I) didnt care for it one bit.
The game mechanic is very contrived, you steer the Loco's with a weird butterfly, the Loco's don't join eachother any more (nooiiii) and there is a very tedious aspect to waiting around for your roco's as you sometime miss getting all of them. I was very disappointed, played it for a few hours and haven't touched it since. I don't understand why Sony doesnt just re-release LocoRoco for the PS3!?! Same controllers, no need to change much. I'd happily buy it again. Cocorecchio was intended as a super fancy screensaver is what I gather and thats all I think it's good for. The music is still just as jolly and cheers you right up after a bad game purchase....Stay away!
