Low expectations yielded an incredibly fun game!5
After buying two highly rated games during Black Friday Week (Uncharted and Uncharted 2) I had $5 left in gift card money and wanted a downloadable game for my PS3. You can't get many good games for $5 these days. Heck, you can't get many games period for that price. But after scouring a few reviews online I finally settled on The Last Guy. The reviews pretty much unanimously said it was a simple yet extremely fun and addictive little game. I kept my expectations in check but I must concur with those reviews: This game is well worth the $5.

The game uses actual satellite images of major cities across the world. Gameplay is simple: Rescue survivors of the zombie apocalypse that resulted after Earth is struck by a purple beam of light (who'd have thought?). The "zombies" in the game hardly qualify as the zombies we all know and love, but that doesn't really matter. This game is seriously fun. I guess it could be described as a game for the "casual gamer", but as someone who is not a casual gamer I find myself completely hooked with it's "simple yet addictive" gameplay. You're essentially a one man rescue team. You have to rescue the survivors who are hold up in the buildings in towns around the world and lead them to the rescue point while avoiding the zombies scattered around the map. Unlike some games that have you catching survivors but not displaying them on screen, in The Last Guy they follow you around in a huge line. And that line can grow as long as there are survivors to rescue, usually over 2,000.

You can gain bonus points (and trophies) for bringing an especially long line of survivors to the drop point, but usually you only need to rescue around 1,000 (in small or large groups if you wish) before the time runs out and the rescue ship arrives to get the people out of the city. And scattered throughout the cities are VIPs that you can rescue for bonus points (and more trophies).

I've had so much fun with this game that I played the first level at least a dozen times trying to get as many survivors as I could and trying to get the longest line possible. It's really addicting and fun to watch your line of thousands scrambling behind you screaming their little heads off when a zombie gets too close. I can't recommend this game enough.

EDIT: After about a week of play I must add a very important point: this game gets really hard, really fast! I managed to get all the VIPs and received 3 stars in level 1 (San Fransisco) after about a dozen attempts, and completed levels 2 and 3 with maybe 2 stars (after multiple attempts on each) but level 4 is crazy hard with the Big Zombie scattering your line everytime it screams. I still highly recommend this game though. Even though it's back up to $9.99 (it was $4.99 over the Thanksgiving holiday), it's worth checking out. If in doubt check out the demo on the PSN store first.

A game simple in concept, super fun in gameplay.5
This game should not be fun. In the same way that the Phoenix Wright games shoudln't be fun because 'all you do' there is read and select items here and there, The Last Guy is such a niche title that I'm amazed other people like it. I downloaded the demo without reading the game's description. The picture for it made me think it was about the last guy alive and that it was going to be a date simulator or something. Yeah, don't ask. What I got instead was basically a Google Map maze-type of game with zombies and monsters. Whoever came up with the idea for this and got it approved deserves a statue made in their honor. Maybe a national park too.

Earth was hit by a mysterious beam, and only the people that were indoors when it occured stayed normal and lived. The Last Guy is here to save them all, and he's going to do it by rounding everyone up from those buildings and getting them to a safe zone where a helicopter takes them away. You'll navigate through the streets of major cities while avoiding monsters and zombies, and listening to a very, very catchy tune. The more people you have following you, the higher your stamina bar builds up, which allows you to run faster for a short period of time. If the crowd gets out of control, use your whistle to get them back in formation.

If you haven't seen gameplay footage or pictures of the game, you should do that now. Basically, picture an overhead map of a city, and that's what you'll see in the game. All the characters are very tiny in this game, including The Last Guy, who is identifiable by his red cape. Monsters are usually a lot bigger, and it's easy to see them coming. You can also zoom out (and zoom in a tiny bit) to see more of the map, though sticking with the standard view is best. Pressing the X button switches to a night vison view that highlights all the humans you need to rescue and paths to them, but it also doesn't show the monsters, so you can't just stay in this view without taking some big risks. At the end of each level, you're rated on several things, like if you exceeded your goal of people rescued, gathered any VIPs and more. The game also has trophy support, but most of these aren't very easy!

As far as graphics go, I think this game could've been done on the original Playstation. It's just maps with litle monsters and people, that's it! The soundtrack isn't more than a few tracks long, and you're going to be hearing the same track over and over again, but it's such a catchy track that I can't complain about it.

I love this game, and don't have any plans of deleting it from my ps3. It's so unique and I'm glad I got the demo on a whim. If you're looking for something good on the PSN, and this sounds interesting to you at all, get the demo. If you like what you play, buy it. It's not too long but there are a few bonus levels and getting everything will take a time and practice. No regrets here. Hopefully the guys that made this can put out another odd but unique title soon!

    Fun, filled 2d madness,4
After spending over 12 hours downloading this game (granted 15kbs and the game is 611mb but eh it's Iraq) I installed and gave it a shot. Next thing I knew it was almost 2100 after starting up the game at 1600.

    The good,
Very fun game, hours of endless enjoyment. The ambiance is good, interesting story, the intro is pretty cool as well. It is a Casual Game however if you do not pay attention to the time you can seriously loose yourself in the game. I didnt pick up the expansion yet however I think I will give it a shot. This is a game for people who have to many games and just want a break from "Hard Core" gaming. I have 30+ ps3 games and yet this game in one day got more play then half of the games I own got when I first got them.

    The Bad,
If you are prone to headaches and easily pissed off due to making semi small mistakes or are a perfectionist I'd say skip it. This is a game that when you mess up you can either retry or loose tons of time which is very important. The music can be annoying at times.

Overall, Very cool game, for 10 bucks very much worth it. As JJ has already said, pick it up.
