I should have known better! I really should!
As with the vast majority of licensed titles pitched to the kids this one has major issues. As I am watching my son play I'm realizing that, once again, the camera is a problem. Why oh why can they not get this right? It seems a bit shaky and sometimes slow to react to changes and is frustrating as a result. The combat seems pretty good-my son had little problems picking up most of it. The music is good (theme from the show I think as I recognize it from hearing it on TV) in the theme area and just o.k. as you get into the game. There are missions or goals to accomplish so this makes it not feel exactly like an action oriented game but more almost quest like (keep in mind this is smaller scale made for kids questing). Nothing elaborate--just things you have to accomplish. My son enjoyed playing Hulk alot when Hulk is just fighting. That seems to be the problem--there isn't a lot of tutorials and he's only 9 (I think a good age for the game based on who probably watches the show) and he is a fairly experienced gamer at this point but he shut the game off in frustration twice already and we got it today. That is never a good sign. It was a reward for him so I am very bummed.
The characters are cute though and my son says they are like the show so that is a plus. He loves the show. I'm not an expert on animation and shading and all that so someone else would need to comment on that. My viewpoint is a mom who bought the eagerly anticipated game as a reward for accomplishing several goals for my son.
Along with this I bought my daughter the Bakugan game that came out today. I hope at least I chose well for one of them or I'm going to be very upset. I've already re-affirmed my promise to myself that I would no longer buy any licensed franchise stuff for kids from TV shows or Movies. We have had so few successes and so many misses that to me now it seems it's just cashing in on the label and was put to market without adequate testing and it lacks the ending quality control if that makes sense--and many seem to lack any understanding of the market. They are either too hard or too easy with few exceptions. My son and I are now reading the booklet to see if that helps at all but most kids just jump into the game and are not going to take the time to read the manual. Plus the manual is not going to help you through a mission--it just tells you what a mission is. This game needed to do like the Lego games and provide some more tutorials or maybe help walk the kid through the first couple of missions or make it so evident where to go/what to do. Not so easy like the Dora and Diego games but not complicated like a T game either.
In the end he did enjoy the fighting so this is why the 2 stars. I would normally have him spend a lot more time with a game but I felt compelled to write this one because our level of dissapointment was high. Maybe the 2 player will be better-we haven't tried that so I can't give my opinion. If it's better I'll edit my post to add that. Let's hope this is the case!
Grandsons review of Super Hero Squad
I purchased this for my 9-year old grandson and in his words, "Granny this game is so much fun I don't want to stop playing it and do my school homework. But if I don't my dad will not let me play. He said, "I give it three thumbs up".Super Hero Squad
Excrutiatingly boring for adults, but my son is still playing it 3 months later!
I will write 2 reviews: one as my 7-yr-old would describe it, one from me.
If you are
The camera angle focuses on Player 1, so Player 2 frequently disappears of the screen if you are too far away from each other, even though Player 2 is still fighting and getting hit. After a few seconds, player 2 will reapear at the center of the screen. When fighting hoards of Doombots/Lokibots/molemen, sometimes you wipe them all out, then wonder around for 10-30 seconds waiting for the game to realize you are ready for the next stage to start.
The cutscenes are incredibly lame. The dialogue is sometimes cute (Thor: My brother doth hast violated the laws of nature and copyright!; everyone calls Ms. Marvel Ms. Crankypants just like in the cartoon), but the scenes are stills of the characters with dialogue - no actual movement/animation.
You can't save in the middle of a level, as far as I can tell. So you have to do a 30-45 min level all over again to go back and find the Spiderman unlock token.
One good note: 3 months after receiving it, my 7-yr-old still plays it everytime he is allowed to play videogames. We have a PS3 in the living room and the old PS2 in the toy room w/ the old TV. The PS2 machine has become a Super Hero Squad machine. There are VERY few videogames that can get 3 months of intense use for just $19.99 plus tax. Although I grit my teeth everytime I play it w/ my son, if your kids love Marvel Superheroes/the Superhero Squad cartoon, and you don't like the violence/flirtatious overtones of other superhero games, you will get a lot of mileage out of this 20 bucks.
