Hours of fun with this one
I have had this game now for about a couple of weeks, and now, after really getting into all of what it has to offer, feel I can give a good review of it. Before I start, let me say that I bought this one after only playing the EA hockey games, and was a bit skeptical about buying it, but I have to say that I am now extremely glad I did. Mind ya, there are a few things I would fix with it, but I can say that all the good this one has to offer outweights the bad.
GRAPHICS: Here is where 2K sports drops the ball. This game has PS1 graphics at best. EA's is MUCH better, but I will take these graphics when it comes to the gameplay this game offers.
SOUND: Like all hockey video games, the announcers lack here. There commentary is dull and repetative at best. While it does not take anything away for the game, it does not add anything to it as well.
GAME PLAY: Here is where this game beats EA's game hands down! The game flows well, is as close to realistic as it can be. The goalies on here are the toughest I have ever seen in any video game, and I have been playing NHL games since the Sega Genises days. It is extremely hard to score on the goalies in this game. They do not give up the cheap goals like the ones on EA does, which makes this one far less frustrating. Line changes can be a bit frustrating, but once ya get used to it, along with line matching, they are not too bad. The Pro Stick control is fantastic, and adds so much to this game.
Extras: There are TONS of historic teams, logos, and different rinks to unlock by completing tasks in this one. It is great to be playing the 1980 USA/USSR game, or having Gretzky play against Gordie Howe in their prime. To me, this alone makes this game well worth the purchase.
Like I said before, I was not too sure about getting this game, but now I can say I will never play another one. I highly endorse it to anyone and everyone. Trust me, you will not be dissapointed in it.
A sloppy effort that manages to deliver some decent gameplay
I bought this title on impulse because I love hockey and the price was right, myself having yet to purchase a next-gen console. Although a decent hockey experience, even with low expectations the game managed to disappoint me. I will share my experience with this title as it seems hard to find reviews for it online.
PROS
-Decent gameplay that flows well, with the ability to call defensive and offensive plays on the fly such as clearing the net, screening of goalies and defensive pinches. It is satisfying to call for some traffic in front of the net, position yourself with some nifty backward offensive skating, and let a shot rip having your big men on the front lines deflect it passed the net minder, or calling for a net crash and dishing a one timer. The game overall has the decent 2k gameplay of which we are all familiar with: good dump and chase options with slap dumps to work the boards (your AI teammates are surprisingly good around the boards), one-button wrap-arounds, humorous and amazingly varied Intense Contact Controls (throwing some elbows, slashes, cheap shots up high... the list goes on and on), icon passing... all the fun stuff gameplay-wise is presented here (if you change the default controls...), although much less smoothly than passed efforts.
-Tons of unlockables, hefty features and a variety of stats and strategies.
-There are plenty of sliders and tweaks to cater the game to your liking, which includes separate settings for player and computer. We all love video hockey sliders, right?
-Excellent & varied puck physics and smooth, realistic animations... in particular the netminders.
-2K super slow motion instant replays are as awesome as ever and still the best user-controlled replays in the business.
-Attractive packaging with a brightly colored manual... until you open it.
-Pretty solid online play and roster update downloads.
The CONS are where it starts to get quite ugly. Some are serious, others not so serious, and many are a direct result of the developers not spending much time working out the bugs. I will list the oversights and annoyances that I have found in under 2 weeks of ownership.
CONS
-Poor presentation. Even for the aging Ps2, the graphics are awful... just plain ugly and the players look nothing like their real-life counterparts. No available camera angles really draw you into the action. The sound is generally bad. Although some of the effects are decent, most sound stinted and cheap. The music is downright terrible... only a few songs on the 14 song soundtrack don't make me cringe.
-The goalies are pretty tough, but many of the goals scored for some reason deflect off and underneath the glove or blocker, or simply pass right through, as they overreact unnaturally at times... for example, the goalie will be in perfect position to stop the puck, but they will get locked into a "high blocker save" animation throwing their arm up in an exaggerated manner, allowing the puck to pass below.
-The ice doesn't degrade as the period goes on in the NHL rinks, but does with the international teams. It stays unnaturally glossy the whole game with the NHL teams.
-You must load your custom or downloaded rosters and lines every time you play. It will not do it automatically and managing 5+ different save files for profile, settings, roster, soundtrack, etc. is tedious.
-The glass breaks way too often. 4 out of 5 hard slap shots that miss the net up high will break it. There is no option to disable it or decrease it so be prepared for unnecessary stoppages due to this.
-Your computer-controlled defensemen are worthless and no where near as effective as the computer's, as they will let the puck carriers walk right in front of the net. Hopefully you don't prefer to be a center or winger on a back check when it comes to defense or positioning yourself in the neutral zone to anticipate breakouts as they are completely unreliable. They also tend to ignore lose pucks occasionally.
-Passes will very often bounce right off your player's skates. The puck will just sit at their feet while they struggle to gain possession of it.
-There are no fights, which is strange because there is a section in the book and an in-game page taunting you by touting the fight controls and features, Sky Box challenges for them, but I have never seen one in nearly 100 games I have played. There is no option to enable it or increase it. This is an unacceptable oversight.
-The semi-useful auto-deke button is broken during shootouts. Pressing the button during a shootout makes your player twitch instead of deke, which can be repeatedly pressed to simulate a seizure. Fake wrist shots also do not function in shootout mode. Also, quite often during shootouts when the CPU takes it's turn, it will bug out and skate back in forth in front of the goalie until their time runs out.
-Although generally the animations are quite realistic (in particular offensively and shooting) skating animations often appear very jerky and choppy.
-Playing defense realistically is not only rather boring, but ineffective. The only effective way is to skate around viciously checking everyone as hooks and the manual poke are next to worthless... The brutal slashes and elbows you can deliver with Intense Contact Controls are the only thing that makes defense any fun, but they will land you in the penalty box more often than not unless you turn such penalties off or very low.
-The last con I will list is nearly a game breaker. Several times a game, your defensemen will get caught in the animations from skating backward and forward when the opposition goes on the attack, which means that your player will be spinning around in a circle in place in a jerking, glitching manner, even if you are yanking on the control stick to skate in a direction, and the puck carrier will just skate right by the helpless defender causing breakaways and odd-man rushes.
Overall, the game barely manages to achieve "average" status. The Pro Stick is poorly executed and very sloppy. The Superstar Moves are generally ineffective and more trouble than they're worth. There really is no way to make moves and dekes on a goalie other than moving back and forth as if it's a 16-bit, 1994 hockey game, with an occasional shot fake... only now the more modern and advanced goalies have the advantage on breakaways simply because there just aren't any good options for a puck carrier against them. Of all the problems with NHL 2k9, arguably the most frustrating and what caused me the most grief is the lack of creative and relatively reliable options one on one against a goalie.
Although the game can be quite fun and offers some satisfying moments and deliberate pacing, be prepared for a glaring lack of polish on both the gameplay and presentation sides of the spectrum. It seems they were trying to force simplicity into a system that today can benefit from some amount of complexity and depth in the gameplay department, creating quite a mess of a game as 2K hockey continues to take steps backward. However, if you have always been a fan of their hockey games, you will likely find this one enjoyable... though you will be equally as likely to be disappointed in what could have been a great hockey game if not for the constant reminders of developer negligence while playing it.
Frustrating, full of glitches. Can send you into a rage!
If you've played NHL 2K7, or 2K8, it's the same game with a slight polish to the graphics, roster updates, and "new" commentary. This review will attempt to list every error, glitch, and logical oversight that I can remember.
First, much has been said about the sliders allowing you to fully customize the game experience. I have found that even while playing on the default highest difficulty, that you win the Presidents Trophy and sweep most of the playoffs just about every time. Now this isn't to say that the game controls well, and is "easy" in the traditional sense, because there's a lot of headaches and logical gaps that will have you wanting to turn violent.
Playing on the default slider settings means that the game experience will quickly become stale. On the highest difficulty I would often out shoot my opponents 60 to 10, or about that. Did you know that you can still lose when you out shoot the other team by fifty shots? The makers of NHL2K9 seem to think so. I have seen B-level goalies make over fifty saves in this game. I have also seen all-star goalies on MY team post a .500 save percentage in one game. Explain that one to me. The attributes for each goalie doesn't seem to matter much as to how they actually perform.
I like to fix the sliders so that the shots end up being more even, and this leads to a much funner challenge. But when I'm playing these tight games and GOALS ARE SCORED (against me) THROUGH THE BACK OF THE NET FROM BEHIND, I throw my PS2 controller against whatever is near by. There is also the issue of your defenders going into full body spasms when you switch to them while protecting their zone. This allows break-away chances, and you have to hope the goalie stops it. I have also seen, but this is more rare, the defender on the blueline being invisibly hooked all the way to the bench in a gliding motion. Also, most players on your side rarely skate after loose pucks, and often when you pass to them they put their stick up to receive it and then barely miss. They also allow the puck to get stuck under their sticks and allow themselves to be checked into oblivion. And forget about making more than a few passes in the offensive zone before losing the puck.
Players constantly fail to pick up centering passes to set up one-times. They just skate right on just ahead of it, as if they have no anticipation for the puck. It's easy to just slap or wrist the puck to the net on every play, but that sure does get boring fast. On the other hand, when the CPU team is in your zone, their passes are AMAZING. Their only fault is that they don't shoot enough, and often pass until you can finally steal the puck. But mostly it's this: CPU makes a pass, pass connects, I check him, the pucks floats almost magically to another CPU player and he makes a perfect pass, I check the player, and the puck ONCE AGAIN ends with with the CPU immediately. Do you know why? You have to basically be controlling the player yourself to pick up loose pucks, because the rest of your team just stands around. The CPU is so aggressive to get the puck back and all five skaters work together well. That's what real hockey is all about - team playing. But why can't the team I'm controlling work together? That's why a star forward on your team usually finishes the season with 40+ goals, but maybe 10 assists.
The announcers are terrible. They often say that a shot was tipped when it was really just a breakaway - one skater in alone coming in with a wrist shot. He says "top left taken away by Nabokov", even when that particular goalie is NOT IN GOAL!" Even funnier, they call various players -insert name here, Cheecho. Example: Nylander Cheecho up to shoot next. Speaking of the shoot out, it's absolutely ridiculous. Whether you score or not is mostly random luck, since even when you notice the moves you made when you scored, you mostly won't be able to repeat those moves and score again. What's even more retarded is when the CPU shoots, they often just skate side to side and sometimes don't even take the shot! Needless to say, shoot outs can go MANY, MANY rounds scoreless. But by far the worst thing about the shoot out is that sometimes THE SHOOT BUTTON STOPS WORKING altogether.
Before this turns into a freakin' novel, I'll just close and say that if you have any kind of temper problems or high blood pressure, stay the hell away from this game.
